B. F. Skinner’s entire system is based on operant conditioning. The organism is in the process of “operating” on the environment, which in ordinary terms means it is bouncing around it world, doing what it does. During this “operating,” the organism encounters a special kind of stimulus, called a reinforcing stimulus, or simply a reinforcer. This special stimulus has the effect of increasing the operant -- that is, the behavior occurring just before the reinforcer. This is operant conditioning: “the behavior is followed by a consequence, and the nature of the consequence modifies the organisms tendency to repeat the behavior in the future.”

Imagine a rat in a cage. This is a special cage (called, in fact, a “Skinner box”) that has a bar or pedal on one wall that, when pressed, causes a little mechanism to release a foot pellet into the cage. The rat is bouncing around the cage, doing whatever it is rats do, when he accidentally presses the bar and -- hey, presto! -- a food pellet falls into the cage! The operant is the behavior just prior to the reinforcer, which is the food pellet, of course. In no time at all, the rat is furiously peddling away at the bar, hoarding his pile of pellets in the corner of the cage.

skinner box - sound like anything?

I was thinking this too. I used to work with a behavioural neuropsychologist who was, not surprisingly, a Skinnerian behaviourist at heart. He has some pretty interesting ideas about human behaviour. Reinforcers can be positive or negative, with the goal of increasing a given behaviour. The button, in the case of the chamber, is a negative reinforcer, not to be confused with punishment. The behaviour desired (button press), continues based on the avoidance of the consequence (end of the world).

It also made me think of the island as a giant Walden Two, but with more unhappiness.

You could be right, but I have a feeling there's probably more to it than just that. And, of course, it's intentionally misleading, I'm sure.

For all we know, it just says "Be sure to drink your Ovaltine."

no, they're definitely I Ching, and they're arranged in an unusual (but still pretty common) pattern. There's litereally hundreds of websties that could help somebody to translate the message (albeit to a very vague mystic passage) were one so inclined. I am not.

<---had a teacher who was creating his own I Ching once, convinced me to throw coins for a year.

Anyone know Morse code, offhand? I'm wondering if the rows of lines in the Dharma symbol are Morse code.

Here's a pretty interesting analysis of the symbol. Link.

This may be a stupid question, but.... How did Locke end up in the wheelchair? I haven't missed an episode yet, but I can't seem to recall if they've covered this. Thanks!

Shit! For wanting to party it up with a band, I'm gonna miss out on tonight's episode. Someone remind me to research Direct TV prices tomorrow.

Thank you.

Repeatedly.

No, he was. Him and Michelle Rodriguez survived with like 20 others in the tail section, but only a handful are still alive (we aren't exactly sure why, I don't think).

Lost was ranked 15th in tv viewing last year, but first in web viewing [source- ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY Sept 30 (sorry no link)].

Apparently there are torrents of the episodes all over the web. Anyone know where these are and how to view them? I've had zero luck actually playing any movie torrent files.

I am a torrentard.

I thought last night's episode was pretty boring. I really hope they pick it up starting next week. So far, everything from the first four episodes could have easily fit into a 2-hour special or something.

I liked it but I got the impression the actors themselves are starting to go "what the hell is going on?"

I didn't think it was too bad, but I wasn't exactly hanging off the edge of my seat. I like Hurley's character on the show, but to be honest I've found the episodes/sequences where they feature his backstory to be among the least appealing.

Or that there are at least 3 different facilities on the island.

I'm also getting sick of the superfluous flashbacks. The only characters we really need to know any more about are Jack, Locke, and maybe Kate.
