Whiney really says that CMJ's working on a site overhaul and new message board after which we will all be politely asked back. Hopefully that will work. This has been fun, and Haq's done an amazing job, but it's not CMJ.

hmm. this is going to be a difficult decision for me - my allegiances may have shifted. i mean, they are all great folks - but they don't actually provide me with the merchandise I purchased from them.

They should be working on better magazine distro instead of overhauling their website.

i dont know, i like it here. i dont really have any reason to go back right now, either. and yes, i agree that theyve got bigger problems than their website they should be looking after right now.

i'll go where the crowd is, i guess. although the idea of a printed magazine about the same ten bands that every other media focuses on seems kind of silly to me now. i guess i don't see any value in the product that they're trying to sell, not unlike cd stores.

Attempts to fix their website are a bit too late.

At the present moment, i understand your point (though i don't agree...unless you already subscribe to 9 other music magazines, who cares that the media is following CMJs lead and flooding the market with indie rock coverage?). 3 years ago CMJ was covering artists the media was ignoring. 3 years from now, the media will follow the new "in" and CMJ will still be covering bands that fly under the mainstream radar. In my eyes the value right now is the fact that CMJ does it sincerely, even-handedly, and just plain better than everything else on the racks. Too bad they don't do it on time...or make it available to newstand buyers...

i check out the cmj board, but don't post there much anymore obviously. i remember everyone thinking that konstantinl board was going to be the answer, but i guess it just never picked up. i'm not sure why, other than the cmj problems seemed to be fixed. i browse a few boards daily, but i don't want obner and cmj to be the same board. so i'd be willing to give the new cmj board a chance for at least a while. i guess i have a soft spot for it.

I think I've pretty much established that I can post anywhere, and often. Bring it on. I'll be there.

I'm with Bloor. I've never ever even seen a copy of CMJ, so I have no allegiance to the magazine, and that's not why I spent over 2 years there. This site boasts more features, is generally preferable, and is comprised of most of the same people. Why wouldn't you want to remain autonomous from CMJ? We can make this place whatever we want.

I have stopped even looking there, I find the layout to be so ugly compared to what we have here.

The only allegiance to CMJ I had left the company, they stiffed me royally on my subscription, and the gift subscription I purchased for my sister, and their attitude sucks. Whiney can have fun playing with himself and writing reviews no one will ever read.

We'll see what happens and when, but I hope we can keep the bad blood to a minimum. I've enjoyed obner's life up till now, and I think we can make much out of it, so I'll be keeping it around as long as it makes sense to. Like Tania and Phil said, I think there's room in the interweb for both of us, and maybe as obner grows into its own niche that will become clear (alternatively, it could just become obvious that this is just CMJ Refugees 2 and everyone will leave).

So to summarize: sna.

Even if the board over there is improved we are still going to have the same problems as before. The melt downs, the street teamers, the right wing lunatics, the lingering doubt CMJ could go belly up at any moment. To swap this for that is just lunacy. I can't believe some of you are even entertaining the thought.

I plan on keeping Refugees going by posting Black Adder and Red Dwarf quotes there every day. For no better reason than that it only takes a couple of seconds to do.
