What is (s)he using to burn them? I've never encountered any problems when using a program called DVDShrink.

I have had a few DVDs that DVD Shrink couldn't handle. Try ripping the DVD with DVD Decrypter (this program will only save the files on the hard drive - it doesn't burn them). Use DVD Shrink to compress the saved DVD files, and then burn (use DVD Shrink normally to do this, just select 'open files' instead of 'open disc').

There are a few tricks that they use to confuse DVD Shrink. Check the forum or do a search for "jumping boy protection" for examples.
