It's hard to believe but The Chicago Bears are tied for first place in their division and play the Lions in Detroit next week for the battle of the NFC North.

Some random thoughts:

Man, that 56-yard kick Edinger made for the Vikings with seconds left on the clock makes me wish we hadn't gotten rid of him. Especially since its become apparent that we need a reliable field goal kicker now. That was the second longest field goal in NFL history.

Thomas Jones. Unstoppable right now?

I don't know who's more to blame for the Bears anemic passing offense, Orton or Muhammad. Probably Orton who's still developing but I'll still always regret the Bears having traded Marty Booker to the Dolphins. He was such a great team leader. Our O-line is looking so much better so far this year. Orton had all the time in the world today against a pretty good Baltimore defense.

Bears games are incredibly boring to watch. A defensive win is still a win but boy it doesn't make for an exciting game.

I think the Bears are going to smoke the Lions again, this time in their own backyard. The Lions have lost too many of their key players to injury so far this year and the Bears seem to be riding a wave. IF they can make the passing game click, they have a legitimate shot at the playoffs and a winning record this year.

*raises drink in hand* Here's to optimism.

I'm right here. They still suck, homer.

P.S. I can't wait for the Bears/Falcons Sunday Night game. (even though you guys' D is potentially scary.)

6. I'll give you wins at home against San Fran and Green Bay and 1 out of 3 on the road between GB, Minn, or N.O.

But hey, its the NFL; you guys play good D and run the ball pretty well so you could do better. I'm just giving you my opinion.

I think they go 7-9 or 8-8 and have a chance to win the division.

I never said they were even that good without Grossman, they were just much improved on offense. I figured they were about average in the NFC.

i don't know how you can blame muhammad at all for the bad passing game. the opposing D knows it's coming to him 85% of the time so he's in double coverage, but orton still throw to him anyway. it's been nice to see the TE worked in.

and still, I retain my thoughts from way back in the draft in saying why the fuck would we draft a RB when we have a fine running back in Thomas Jones. I really need someone to tell me what is so horrible about him that warranted NOT picking up Mike Williams.

i mean, really. it's not like we had a curtis enis/salaam to work with. he's 27 years old, almost got 1000 yards rushing last year while missing a couple games. That's HUGE considering that there was no passing game to speak of and the opposing d's knew that. that was certainly not a weak spot at all, and for the life of me cannot and will never understand why the Bears thought the need for a RB was at a higher priority than our desparate need for a WR or maybe a D-back.

the worst thing about this is that as long as Jones plays well, Benson has no value whatsoever in terms of trade. He can't pass block, he hasn't hit the hole hard, it's just another fucking wasted pick.

i don't know if that's the worse thing, or if the worse thing is the fact that Angelo actually believed that the best decision was to spend a #4 pick on a RB when what we had was perfectly fine.

I'd like to add a few things to this thread.

One, I don't know why they drafted Benson either. I had a lot of faith in Jones both before and after his above average season with us last year. However, I still think Benson will turn out to be a good player. They drafted Benson mainly because he was worthy of a #4 pick, and because Jones has not shown the ability to stay injury free. I think that if Benson wasn't behind him this year, no way he comes back from that knee injury without missing a game.

Mike Williams would've been a huge reach at #4, and I wouldn't have been happy with that pick either. I wanted Derrick Johnson.

Second, for the person who still wishes we had Edinger, please. Do you remember how goddamn AWFUL he was the past two seasons with us? He makes one field goal, albiet a long one, and suddenly he's the golden child again? Let's not forget it was in a DOME.

Gould should do all right for a rookie, he's at least getting his kick-offs deep. I seriously can't remember Edigner getting one past the 10 yard line in the last two years. What we really should have done was kept that Novak kid.

Annnnd finally, I happen to be a supporter of Jerry Angelo. Sure, he isn't perfect -- by any stretch. But he's soley responsible for this amazing defense we've all been watching. He's had a WEALTH of amazing 3rd and 4th round picks. Maybe we just shouldn't allow him to pick in the first?

In the NFL, you need two running backs. Jones is having a great (I LOVE Thomas Jones BTW and have since he was at UVA, glad to see him FINALLY doing it in the pros) season, but running backs will go down. Benson is a rookie, he will learn the game.

A rookie WR is not very valuable anyways and you guys dont have the QB to get him the ball anyways.

You guys should be happy with what you have.

i totally understand what you're saying. i'm not against the fact that we got an RB in the draft, just the fact that it was the first pick. sure it's easier to say all of this 7 weeks in, but I felt this way at leading up to the draft. oh well.

That's the NFL. The Chargers went 12-4 last year splitting with Denver & beating Jax (9-7) while racking up 10 wins vs losing teams. And this year Cinci is 5-2 with a schedule that includes a rematch with Pit, KC & Indy after a bye week & not a whole hell of a lot else. They could go 11-5 & grab a playoff spot without 1 single impressive win.
