That seems a little extreme. It's an iPod, so the users will likely experience major hard drive and/or battery problems before the screen gets too scratched. These are probably the same people buying songs from the iTunes music store.

"These DRMed files are barely AM radio quality and they cost almost $1 each! THIS IS GREAT!"

I don't use anything portable with an LCD screen without using screen protectors. They're cheap, and work great.

Yeah, WTF are these people doing with these things? Putting them in the same pocket as their car keys?

Everyone I know who owns an iPod, including me, keeps it in some kind of protective case with a screen cover. I would think that anyone who will spend somewhere in the neighborhood of $200 for a portable electronic device will also take some steps to protect it.

Still, it's not surprising that Apple is trying to dodge the problem. They won't be able to replace anything until they design a sturdier model. Personally I can't blame them for thinking that people might actually be more careful with such a fragile-looking piece of electronics.

When certain New Pornographers and Elvis Costello tracks are "iTunes Exclusives?" You bet!

Mostly I just think it's sad when 2 horrible products (the iPod and music files from the iTunes store) are HUGE successes, even though there are much better choices available. Why people sometimes don't seek out better products for their money (especially when those better products are less expensive) is a mystery to me.

Man it must be a huge burden to be smarter than the MILLIONS upons MILLIONS of people who buy iPods and purchase music from iTunes, including myself.

So The Eagles' Greatest Hits is the best album ever made?

Aren't lawyers the only one's who really benefit in a class action lawsuit...the buyers aren't likely to see much in return.

Calling the iPod "horrible" is a bit of a stretch. It may not have all of the features of some other players, but it does a decent job. And now it seems to be reasonably priced.

I would even consider buying one if it weren't for the fact Apple is even worse than Microsoft when it comes to their proprietary formats. At least Microsoft has licensed their format to other manufacturers.

I got ~$13 from the CD overpricing class-action lawsuit about two years ago...I used the money to buy a cd.

Maybe because some people who trash them don't suggest what products are better? Maybe because iPod is starting to reach Kleenex/Xerox-level of brand recognition in their market? Maybe because we as media-consuming human beings are victims of marketing and often settle for 'good enough' rather than 'optimal?'

Elvis Fu's Eagles analogy is a decent one, but by the same token the Beatles don't automatically suck because they have more number 1 hits than anybody else.

Oh, give me a friggin' break. "Horrible"? Let's see . . . I've had my Ipod for almost 11 months now. I haven't had a SINGLE problem - nothing, not one damn problem, and this thing has seen a LOT of use: used on a 2+ hour drive every day, anywhere from 2-8 hours of listening at work every day - that's many, many hundreds if not thousands of hours of listening. No problems: ZERO. Remember, for every bad instance you see about the Ipod, there are an uncountable number of happy customers. We're talking about a product that has sold nearly 30 MILLION units - if this was such a bad product, it would never have made it this far. People may be gullible with $15 and an Eagles CD, but they're certainly not going to go throw $400 away on a whim.

I'm not an Apple fan, but I was just pointing out the obvious fallacy of the "majority rules" argument. It's way too easy to point to majority support when it supports the issue you champion. On this board, majority numbers are never called in as evidence of the artistic credibility of Creed, the illegitimacy of gay marriage or the culinary expertise of McDonalds.

I think the burden now lies on Natural Mike to name which products are so clearly better and cheaper than their iPod counterparts.

Not saying they don't exist. I have a non-iPod as well as the iPod Mini I got for free. The non-iPod has a lot of nice features that the iPod doesn't have, but it only has 1/4 of the space. Also its interface is horrible, and a lot of its extra features don't work so well. It wasn't that much cheaper than a Mini.

The iPod is clearly going to be the most scrutinized of all of the mp3 players because it's the most popular. You can't find nearly as much feedback about all of the competitors as you can about iPods. I've tried, and the results have always been pretty inconclusive. Also I've been surprised to find that iPod prices aren't really that much higher than comparable models by competitors.

This is like the old Mac vs. PC argument. Meh.

To be fair, his argument was also against the iTunes music store. At a buck for a shitty mp3 with or without DRM, this ain't that a good deal.

Agreed. All I'm saying is that the "majority are idiots. that means you, jackass" argument is equally inappropriate. The only case made against the iPod in this thread is that there have been reported defects and it's not as feature-rich as other players, whatever those players are.

EDIT: and what Drinky said
