I've been doing them for a few years. Sometimes even send them out to a bunch of people as a Christmas card. Oftentimes get no feedback, but once in a while get one of those thank you's that make it all worthwhile. What about you? The one I sent out last year is here but haven't put this year's together yet. Been moving a lot this year and only just now getting settled down so might have to wait until after Christmas this time. Guess maybe this should go in the mix forum but just thought I'd check here and see what's happening since I'd love to get in on any trades that are going around! Way too many things that I've not had a chance to hear this year.

i put together my own year end comps -- have been doing so for at least 5 years now.

currently, i put 3 comps together per year:
01) top 17 singles
02) top 17 albums (1 song to represent each album)
03) retrospective (by month, 1 extra song per "quarter")

i allow no song repeats amongst the 3 "discs". (They'll probably just be in rio playlists this year unless i make copies again.) i only allow 1 song per artist on #3 above.

I’m making a comp for Finch Platte and told him that I was going to pick bands that a bit more under the radar. I named about ten bands with some of the examples being: Oceansize, Hop On Pop, Adem, Dios and he has yet to hear any of them. I started to put it together last night but I think he will end up getting two. Since I’m doing this I might as well post it and see if anyone else would like it. So Davey maybe we can work something out as well.

I really need to get me some Dalen comps again without having to join AIM.

np: Xiu Xiu – Fabulous Muscles

this will probably be the second year that i make two end-year mixes. there's just way too much to consolidate into even a 120-minute tape. i don't feel the need to document every single thing that i've heard, but there's certainly enough to sustain two mixes. i'm not exactly a great editor. unfortunately, i can't imagine mine being done until january, especially with a mid-december move on the horizon.

this will be the second year in a row that my year-end comp will be 2 discs. i would feel too bad about leaving some really good stuff off of one 80 minute disc.

i was thinking that a cool mix exchange idea would be to have everyone list their complete 2004 rankings, and people would chose 20 or so albums that they have not heard and are interested in and that person could make a mix of the best song from each of those albums. i think we did something similar from listmania.

I wasn’t even looking at what I think is the very best of 2004. It will only contain stuff from 2003/2004 but not the very best. Now I’m unsure damn it!

my mixes are usually just for myself, for the long trips. so i'm not necessarily compiling the best songs on my mixes either, but moreso what i really want to hear when driving or at least traveling. and it's a quick way to sum up a year. though, this comes back to the favorite vs best argument and i don't even want to go there.

I remember tapes, use to make one every three, than two weeks apart. I still think I have all 300+ somewhere.

When I’m done with those CDR’s I will post the play list. IdiotJed you will still be first.

I have to make one because of an idle promise to an other boarder.

Floated my boat for awhile :)

Hey, I saw your year-end list over at that AudioKarma site but they won't let me post over there so just wanted to say, you know, like, cool list. Willard Grant Conspiracy is probably gonna be stuck in many minds as a 2003 release (screw em, mine says 2004) and as an also ran (3.9? WTF, screw Pitchfork, I've got your 3.9 right here losers) but you and me, we both know it was one of the top echelon, high on my list too.

That list was a bit hastily done up, and CUI (compiled under the influence), but not far off the mark. Still a handful of things I want to hear before New Ear, but it is what it is. As for WGC, I'm with ya- I'm using the U.S. release date for my own selfish purposes- to wit: the best farking thing I bought this year.

I've got yearly Best Ofs on 110-minute cassettes stretching back to 1989; they're all in storage or I'd post some track lists.
