one of the aspects of the howard stern replacement saga that i was not aware of was that once he leaves wxrk in nyc, with him will go the station's all rock format, leaving q104.3 the ONLY all rock station in the city. k-rock may have been awful for many years now (since about the time that they decided eminem could be played on a rock station because he's white), but the whole thing still sucks. they're going to switch over to what is going to be called "free fm" which features various talk shows all day and then rock music on the weekends. this is not that dissimilar to what befell whfs in the dc area, but if i remember correctly, they at least go back to the music weekday nights as well.

i may not listen to the radio any more, but this is a really sorry state of affairs.

I dont really have the time or motivation to expand, but its even worse than this.

Sort of on topic: What's up with these "Junkies" guys that are gonna replace Stern during Morning Drive in DC? Any good?

I would actually celebrate if any or all of the rock radio stations in Chicago died (<-- I'm not talking about college stations). While driving home from school a few days ago (I have no tape deck or CD player in my car), I was listening to Nine FM ("We Play Anything!") because Bill O'Reilly was on my favorite talk station. They played Weezer's "Beverly Hills." 15 minutes later, on the same station, they played it again. I wish I was joking. The hard rock/classic rock station plays AC/DCs "Thunderstruck" at least 12 times a day, between spins of the latest Nickelback and Three Doors Down singles. Good riddance, I say.

Stern's replacement in Chicago is some dude called "Rover." He looks like he's gonna be a douche, but I'll give him a chance. At least one of my favorite DJs, Jonathan Brandmeier, is returning to the air this week.

I don't like the Junkies, but I'm not a fan of goofball radio shows anyway. My roommate spends most of his day driving, so he's familiar with all of the radio shows out there. He isn't a huge fan, but likes that they will apparently gamble on ANYTHING.

So how many Stern fans plan on following him to Sirius?

I do plan on subscribing, but I won't be buying a receiver. I'll just listen to him over my laptop, since the show is supposedly broadcast repeatedly throughout the day.

Did you guys hear DLR on the Stern show the other day? Howard goes, "This just in, Eddie Van Halen has been named the new head of the FCC."

I found that to be pretty funny, but so was Dave's response. "That's okay, I'm sure I can sneak a lot by him."

I'd like to follow Stern to Sirius, but I don't want to pay that much money for just his show (the other talk shows and music channels don't interest me). Luckily, Jonathan Brandmeier (<--- mentioned in my previous post) will do a morning show. I'll turn to the "Rover" guy or Loyola's station during the commercials.

I was waiting for Sirius to come out with a walkman-type receiver but it looks like it's going to be awhile before that happens so I think I might just buy one of those boombox ones around Xmas.

I thought K-Rock was one of the top stations in the US in terms of revenue. Was that all Howard, or am I just wrong?

You're 100% right, it sucks even though k-rock was awful at the end. Luckily I'm far enough south that I get g 106.3 which is at least half decent. Mostly I end up listening to college radio. There are a couple good ones around here.

And by the way g-g-g-ghost, stern's show was one of the few profitable ones on the station. Most of the time was a money-losing venture.

i mourn the loss of the real 106.3 to this day. i made so many musical discoveries throughout my life through them, and to see them go full blown mainstream was a huge disappointment. the brookdale and seton hall stations are pretty good (the latter of which is a little too metal, but good some of the time), and there's some 88.7/.9 hybrid of stations that is pretty good. i think i live at the crossroads of a few different incarnations of that station but somehow all of them play good music.

this all sort of goes against my "i don't listen to the radio any more" statement, but there are those rare moments in the car where my cd player won't eject the one i've got in there and i don't feel like listening to it any more.

The brookdale station is pretty good. I find myself listening to the rutgers and tcnj stations as well. But yeah, you make very valid points.

I misread the title of this thread as having something to do with K-Y Jelly...

Is the Stern channel one you will be able to stream? You might want to check because I was under the impression that only the music channels were available to stream (for instance, I cant listen to CNN through the site- all you get is this commercial about listening to CNN on Sirius).
