It seems like everyone bikes for exercise here. If you are into running, how much do you run, what do you listen to, what kind of shoes do you wear, and have you run any big races?

I run about 12-15 miles a week. I was running alot more in the spring probably about 20 miles a week, but it's too hot to run down here in the summer. I actually like to run to the Arcade Fire. I've been running about a year and mostly doing 5ks, but I did one 10k, the Crescent City Classic. I plan on running the a half-marathon in January. Looking for new shoes.

I used to be like that but it's hard to find sports to compete in as you get older. And I hate lifting weights more. So I forced myself for like 2 months, and oddly enough I love it now. Find myself looking forward to it. And there is no feeling like completing a race.

Since my knees were damaged I haven't been able to run much. Mostly I hike in the woods and go "Ow, shit, fuck, goddamn knees, fuck, ow" the whole time.

i hear that. after i had my patella removed and re-attached in a different place, had a bunch of holes drilled into my femur, and had half my cartilage removed - pretty much ended my athletic career.

I used to run about 25 miles a week, but switched to biking after experiencing some knee pain. Now that I have some new orthodics, I plan to give it another try.

I don't listen to anything when running (at least not music). I am a New Balance man.

I ran competitively in elementary school and high school, and ran a few races in college. I was offered a whopping $500 cross-country scholarship (if you can even call it that) to run for the university that was across the street from my high school, but I turned it down. I haven't done any races for at least 6 years, and have no plans to do any in the future - I run to feel good and stay thin, not to pay $20 and get boxed in for the first half of a race. Races in Chicago are for the birds.

Life would suck if I couldn't work out a few times a week. I feel sorry for people who don't appreciate and/or enjoy exercise.

So are strokes and certain forms of cancer*. If I can do simple things to protect my health, I'll do 'em.

*breast cancer in men = underrated

I have a hard time agreeing with that, and I love polluting myself. I'm trying soft to clean my act up a touch, and the days that I am successfully, I feel really good. Health is underrated.

I am too a New Balance man, although my flat feet have felt broken for months, and I blame my trodden sneaks. I haven't run in months, but I intend to soon. I've be stationarily running on the elliptical machine at the gym. I spend as much time as possible chasing balls with racquet in hand.

I kinda overdid the running (again) a few months ago and am slowly working myself back into running shape. I can get some really debilitating shin splints unfortunately and the only real way to get those to heal is to not run. Boo.

On the suggestion of a few folks (xix/mrs. neuro), I started using Brooks shoes back in September and were it not for the onset of shin splints before getting those, I'd probably have a great report to give on them. :) Can't wait to be back out there...

When I first started running, I had a problem with shin splints too. I'm thinking about buying some brooks adrelines. I used to wear New Balance 990's. Recently I've run in Nike Frees which I liked alot.

i ran for a while...5K's, 10K's eventually leading up to a half-marathon about a year and 1/2 ago. but it was really hard on my lower back (eventually found out that i have a bulging disc), so i pretty much quit running and switched to biking and the elliptical machine at the gym.
when i did run, i went with asics as i pronate and they made a great shoe for that.

Yeah, mine come and go. I pretty much stopped running around May '04 due to band stuff and a move to a very poor running area (concrete as far as the eye can see!). I guess a year off, with a car-commute job, just really left my calf muscles, etc. erm, underdeveloped.

The Brooks are ridiculously light and very cushioned, which are 2 things I appreciate. I don't have a pronation or arch problem - just the damn shins.

As inane as calling someone a jackass because he cares about the health of others in the fattest nation on Earth? Hardly.

i would like to get back into it at some point...i've really come to find that nothing comes close to the workout of a good run.
i will definitely steer clear of the pavement though...hit the trails.

I try to hit the trails in Crested Butte when I visit relatives out there. Colorado is sweet.
