Nick Cave

I haven't heard a single Obnerian who doesn't at least like something of his.
And yet, he is not nearly as often the topic of discussion as bands like The Wrens, Arcade Fire, or even The Clash.

Seriously, all I've seen is love for the man 'round these parts.
And that's a good thing.

Here is my vote to have more Nick Cave threads.
Let love in.
And let me know which Birthday Party album is the best to start with. I know nothing by them.

Cannot recall a single note from the guy. My fault, to be sure.

Agreed. Wouldnt know one of his songs if it bit me in the ass.

BUT, I am an open minded bastard so if anybody wants to PMYSI me a mix of his best or his most "seminal" album, I'd be glad to check it out.

I hate Birthday Party, but I love what I've heard of his solo work, which is mainly Boatman's Call and Abattoir Blues/Lyre of Orpheus

Only thing I know of him is John Cash's cover of "The Mercy Seat"

Like everything I've heard from him but don't know much of his work. His cover of the Beatles' "Let It Be" is pretty ace.

Agreed, but if i had to "cherry pick" I would lean more towards his slower balladry as my favorites of his songs.

Sounds like the lack of dissent is at least partially a lack of exposure.

My feelings exactly. I've whittled my Cave reckids down to Let Love In and don't really care if I ever hear another one.

His last three albums have kind of sucked in my opinion, which may be why he's not discussed much. I like a lot of his earlier albums. I like the Birthday Party too but don't really feel qualified to recommend a starter. The 2 I have were really randomly selected.

I trust Uncle Monger.

Ya. Not that exposure would result in dissent.

I like "Boatman's Call" and "Murder Ballads" and the new ones.

The most recent, double album? Sucked?
Boy, I could not disagree more.
Possibly my #1 of last year.
And definately my favorite of all of his albums that I've heard.

But it does appear that I was wrong in the topic of this thread.

Junkyard, if only for 6" Gold Blade and the Ratt Fink cover art.

Definitely one of the better covers albums, and like The Church's Box Of Birds, there's a nifty Alex Harvey track.

Maybe that's a little harsh...but I really don't ever want to hear it again. I know that much. I don't like the rocker album AT ALL, and the slower more ballady one just isn't strong compared to his earlier work in my opinion.

I'll add I was expecting this to be about the Clash. They are the only band I'd expect everyone at least somewhat likes although I'm sure a thread suggesting that would bring some naysayer out of the woodwork.

I tried to listen to Nick Cave a few times, and while there were a few bright spots, they were smothered by all the surrounding boredom.

There was a big buzz around Nick when Pulp Fiction came out. He did that cover of "Girl, you'll be a woman soon." I liked that all right and sought out some other stuff, but I just couldn't get into it. Then, as the Pulp Fiction soundtrack exploded into the mainstream, Nick Cave's cover got played into the dirt. So my disinterest has evolved into affirmative thinking-he-sucks-ness.

Sorry PopTodd. I feel like we have let you down. :(
