that's the rub... when you exercise, you can consume more. It's when you stop exercising, you can't keep eating the same amount. You have to cut down accordingly. That's always a tough one for me, ha ha.

My handy dandy spreadsheet says this for a 28 year old male, 5-10 and 200 lbs. with moderate exercise 3-5 times per week, you should consume between 2894-3075 calories per day to lose ~1.25 lbs. per week.

If yours works the way most in-law families do, you get a by this year, because you just got married. You're golden. It's like when you're in college... every family gathering, you get one token question about classes and then that's it, you're a good kid - as opposed to afterwards, when you and your degree work at a hardware store, and you get awkwardly unanswerable questions.

Next year, beware. Assuming they know little about the Real you, they'll begin pestering you about grandchildren. It builds every year until you finally cave.

This really made me laugh. Because I remember the college/post-college liquor store worker deal. And now will have to deal with the rest ;)

Yeah, shit you're taking that poor defenseless girl out to The Compound?!?!! I mean, have you thought this through? And did I read correctly that her family will be in tow?

On a side note, I've always wondered something - do you guys keep regularly-sized furniture around for people less than 6'8"? Like in a closet or something, for when company comes over?

Ha, can you imagine? Going to Loog's house for thanksgiving, being of normal stature, it'd be like sitting at the kiddie table while all the adults sat at the big-ass table. It makes me think of that Tom Petty video that's based on Alice in Wonderland.

Nope, it is not. for most people - office-type workers who aren't completely sedentary,) that's a healthy calorie level for losing weight while exercising (shooting for 200-300 calories of exercise, so call it 2100 calories and exercise if you want.) The "average" healthy-weight male should be consuming about 2600 calories a day. Add up what you eat (and be honest,) subtract your exercise, and see if you're not going way over this. You really can eat at this level and be satisfied - it's boredom, unhappiness, etc. that makes you go over it.

You eat that and I guarantee you won't lose a thing. You might be looking at something telling you how many calories per week you need to burn in order to lose a pound. Do the math - 2600 calories per day is the "norm." You need to burn 500 calories - at least - per day to lose a pound a week, which is a healthy, safe amount to lose. You're looking at 2100 calories only if you actually burn 500 calories a day. This is not a realistic goal for most people - do you have time every day to exercise enough to burn 500 calories? Most people do not. Take the calorie intake goal down to 2100 and throw in 300 calories of exercise and you WILL see weight loss - and when you hit your goal, you can actually go back to normal - 2600 calories per day - and maintain your weight. Go over that without adjusting your exercise and you'll gain weight. Trust me on this - I lived this and it worked. When I stopped paying attention to what and how much I ate, I gained weight, and quickly!

I have absolutely nothing to base that judgement on. All I'm saying is ABOUT 2600 calories. Maybe one big person needs 2800, while one small person needs 2400. It averages out at 2600. You can find stuff on the internet that will tell you what you need to maintain your current weight, and/or what you need to eat in order to lose. Unless you're well into the many hundreds of pounds or you exercise like a man possessed, I guarantee you that eating 3000 calories a day will not make you lose weight.

Here's an easy formula (found here) to use to determine the calories you need everyday to MAINTAIN your weight (not LOSE weight):

Quote:
For sedentary people: Weight x 14 = estimated cal/day

For moderately active people: Weight x 17 = estimated cal/day

For active people: Weight x 20 = estimated cal/day

Note: Moderately Active is defined as 3-4 aerobic sessions per week. Active is defined as 5-7 aerobic sessions per week.

Right. Here's my original post:

According to this calculation, it works out to (200 x 17) = 3400 to maintain. Subtract the 500 daily caloric deficit to lose a pound per week, and you are at 2900 calories, which places you--well hot damn would you look at that--between the 2894-3075 from my spreadsheet.

Would you like to play again, or can we just sit down and have pie? :D

Most people fall into the "sedentary" range - I've only known one person in my entire life who actually does the 3-4 times a week of aerobic exercise a week, and that's generally the norm for most of the US (and hence our generally overweight status.) Good for you if you actually do this much exercise - I can't imagine how anyone fits that in, but if you do, I applaud you. Remember - the goal is 3500 calories burnt a week, which doesn't work out to 500 a day if you only do it 3-4 times a week. It's more like burning 1000 calories each exercise-day. If you can do that, well, I bow to you.

It's not 3500 calories burnt per week, but a 3500 caloric deficit, either through exercise or a decrease in consumption. If you decrease your caloric intake by 500 per day, you will be on pace for a one pound loss per week, and the calories burned during exercise contribute to that goal. Plus, if you engage in something that retains lean muscle mass, i.e. weight training, then you raise your basal metabolic rate, allowing your body to burn more calories throughout the day, even at rest.

It's only common sense to realize that if you take Rob Reiner off his usual 5000 calorie per day diet and throw him on 1800 per day, his body is going to immediately thing he is starving and not only do everything possible to retain the fat stores for energy later, but it will also break down muscle for energy now, thus lowering his basal metabolic rate. I'd bet Lance Armstrong consumes over 4000 calories a day, since his BMR has got to be through the roof.

And we're totally going to go see Brion when i come out there to scope out a joint.
