i learned today that at some point in the next few weeks, all four of the happy dormant assholes in my mouth are to be surgically extracted. they're already starting to display signs of assholery so it's a pretty good time to do it. it will be my first major surgical procedure and one of the many potential procedures that i can say i've wanted least of all since i was a kid. not that anyone would actually want this done. so basically i've just come to terms with the fact that i'm in store for three days of misery and that'll be the end of it. better than risking looking like this at some point in my life:

My sympathies to you. Although I've heard some diverse opinions regarding this procedure, from mildly unpleasant to hellfire and brimstone. Hopefully it'll be the former.

I believe someone (Derris?) recently had theirs out

It's a different experience for everybody. I didn't feel a thing when they came out and had virtually no pain afterwards.

Speak of the devil..

I just had my two left (upper and lower) pulled yesterday.

My thoughts...
The anxiety going into the procedure seemd to be the worst part for me.. I insisted on going totally under. Even though some people say that a local anesthetic is enough, the mere sight of watching the procedure whether i can feel it or not, was not appealing.

The whole thing took about 45 minutes. I was asleep in the reovery room aferwards for about 35 minutes after that.. Then I came home...

My mouth was 100% numb for the enxt 12 hours...But I was able to eat soup, and this morning I was able to carefully eat breakfast, using mostly the right side of my mouth.

I have an antibiotic to take 3x a day, and he gave me a nice fill of Vicadin for the pain...Which seems to be working...

I milked a second day off, but i think i could have made it into work if i had too...

other than waking up at 5am this morning with some mild throbbing, my experience wasnt too horrible....

As for getting all 4 done at once though, that I dont think id reccommend.. do em 2-3 weeks apart if ya can...unless you can deal with discomfort...

Cool! When I had mine done, two were so impacted that the "extraction" cosisted of smashing them with a hammer and chisel and fishing out the pieces.

Insist on something that starts with "Perco", those Tylenol-4's will be useless.

the doc didn't say anything about separate visits to get rid of them all, so i think he's just going to grab them all in one fell swoop. that's probably for the best anyway, since they're getting to "wow, you'd better get these out soon" stages. as long as i feel less than nothing, i'm okay. i wouldn't have even thought to get them looked at if one of them hadn't made themselves known through the gums on the bottom last week.

I've had some jaw pains lately, and I've been afraid it was due to wisdom teeth.

I really hope not. I can't afford anything like that right now.

Did you wake up with your pants unbuttoned?

I got all 4 done at once, just general anesthesia and some nitrous.

And 050fmzebub is right, insist on the percs..whatever you don't use can trade to your king hell drug freak friends for acid, or at least a couple of dome bags ;)

(Not that that's what I did)

Load up on frozen peas and corn. They make awesome compresses.

I had zero problems with mine. I even had pain pills left over to take back to school.

I've been avoiding this for 5 years. They seem to bother me 2-3 times a year. Otherwise, they are causing no shifting or crowding in my mouth, so I continue to avoid it.

my wisdom tooth extraction experience was AWFUL. i've had extremely bad luck picking out dentists in my time.

i went to the dentist & he stuck me with an anesthetic and said that i'd only feel a little pressure. on one side of my mouth, he was absolutely correct. It sounded awful, twisting his wrist, cracking bone, finally breaking 'em off and cleaning off the remnants. but the other side wasn't fully-medicated properly and it was horrible. cracking two teeth with minimal anesthetic.

i left with prescription for pain medication and a pool of blood in my mouth. i mopped it up before leaving the dentists, but halfway to walgreens & i had a good pool again. i was able to fill out my prescription with mumbles and hand gestures.

the next 2 days i muffled the extreme pain with the drugs he prescribed.

i never went back to him. couldn't trust him after that.

...

the only worse trip was when a dentist didn't fully-medicate me before a drilling. didn't go back to him either. (closest i've ever come to entertaining suing someone.)

we went through my story a while back - oral surgeon had me remove my pants for my wisdom teeth removal - when I woke up I had my pants back on and the doctor was wiping his mouth (j/k about that last part...)

the oral surgeon. yeah - everyone at my high school went to this guy and everyone I spoke to about it had to remove their pants. we all just figured it was to avoid blood getting on our clothes...

i know there was more than just the guy in there with me - there was at least one woman assistant...but who knows what the hell was going on.

he did look a little greek...

I have to get four of mine out also. Dentist told me so about a month ago.

I'm waiting til after the first of the year. I've been putting this off for ten years I figure a few more months won't hurt. Mine are horribly impacted and doing funky things. But I've explained this before.

I actually had a conversation with my son's dentist yesterday morning about the experience and she actually calmed me a little by saying that that to get the anesthesia won't harm me in any way and that I should be fine and that the most will be some numbness and pain for a couple days after that's manageable. And little if ANY bruising.

Ughhh still don't want to do this but mine bother me often.

Didn't Tim Watley and his dental hygienist go at it while Jerry Seinfeld was under sedation?

So, Rodney, if life imitates arts imitates life imitates art, etc., maybe the oral surgeon had two appointments that day, one with you for extraction, one with the assistant for insertion.... But, to make it more fun, the assistant wanted to jack you off, too.
