I mean besides "Bela Lugosi's Dead".

The reason I bring this up is this newly released album, just look at the tracklisting:

[img][650:650]http://www.chartercare.plus.com/Images/goth.jpg[/img]

01 - The Psychedelic Furs - Pretty In Pink
02 - The Mission - Wasteland
03 - Iggy Pop - Real Wild Child (Wild One)
04 - Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
05 - Japan - Quiet Life
06 - Fields Of The Nephilim - Moonchild
07 - The Damned - Love Song
08 - Norman Greenbaum - Spirit In The Sky
09 - Lords Of The New Church - New Church
10 - Spear Of Destiny - Never Take Me Alive
11 - Stranglers - Duchess
12 - All About Eve - Martha's Harbour
13 - Zodiac Mindwarp - Prime Mover
14 - John Foxx - No One Driving
15 - The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown - Fire!
16 - Mobiles - Drowning In Berlin
17 - Gene Loves Jezebel - The Motion Of Love
18 - The Bolshoi - Away II

Black Sabbath? Zodiac Mindwarp??? What the...?

No wonder new goth scenesters are confusing fashion and style for music and substance from this era. With the success of My Chemical Romance's "Helena" video and sales of lace and black eye make up at Hot Topic, I think that goth is going to come back in a big way next year.

Anyways, I wanted to get the Obner opinion here. What are some of your essential "gothic" tunes?

Discuss.

oh, as for essential, well of course Bauhaus, but I'm partial to Stigmata Martyr over Bela Lugosi's Dead. And Sisters of Mercy... anything off of Floodland.

"The Caterpillar" and "Lovecats" for 2.

Black Sabbath absolutely belongs on this. There's a lot of non-goth stuff on here, but I suspect that's because most "goth" stuff sucks balls, and they needed 18 tracks to flesh out a cd.

Maybe so, but Japan? Iggy Pop? Psychedelic Furs' most accessible tune ever? I think they're reaching here.

And why isn't anyone mentioning SPIRIT IN THE SKY???!!!?!
it's from 1969 for got's sake..and not anything approaching Goth.

See, I agree with this. Most "Goth" bands made terribly bad music but I think they could have done a better job with the track selection here.

Why is The Cure and the first incarnation of The Cult always brought up. Sure they may have looked goth but to me their music wasn't. To me, goth music is slow, gloomy and slightly scary. I guess Black Sabbath might fit here after all.

Southern Death Cult/Death Cult qualifies as "goth", I suppose, and "Dreamtime" fits the mold as well--Spiritwalker should be a goth anthem fer cryin' out loud.

I don't think I consider any of that to be goth. Arthur Brown, goth? Don't think so.

I don't even really consider a lot of Sisters of Mercy to be goth (much of Floodland is pretty danceable stuff), but rather stuff like Bauhaus, the less poppy Cure moments, and Clan of Xymox (first two albums).

This bad example of the genre is really motivating me to come up with my own mix.

Christian Death would prolly fit. Can't say I've ever heard their music though. How about Medieval Babes or Rasputina...or Diamanda Galas?

See, its hard to throw stuff on that's definitive for the genre but yet something you'd actually want to listen to. I like the dark, atmospheric stuff best myself...

'Real' Goth (rather than the rather lame parody that is the current incarnation) was actually a bit more complicated and less obvious than the stereotype might lead you to believe.

Take, say, Siouxsie & The Banshees. They didn't really sound goth but they were a popular band with goths. The Cramps too, there was a definate crossover between the goth and pyscho-billy scenes (The Meteors etc). Goths were also into early electro, industrial and ambient music.

Some enjoyable tracks on that comp, but not exactly goth like a Coil "Anal Staircase" or Clan Of Xymox "Cry In The Wind."
