I'm not sure whether to laugh or whether to be amazed that he could do the job so well despite this.

I am director of an adult education program of 10,000 students. There are many adults who are not literate (and even, did you really?, white), and while I certainly don't want to have a Katie Couric moment of hightening awareness(nor, god help, an upcloseandpersonalolympicathleteswithmothersdyingofgreaseingestionsyndrome)... there are large numbers of adults who pretend literacy, have tricks to exist without literacy. Actually, our country, for a wealthy western industrial democracy... really sucks at this. Cuba has a higher literacy rate.

Plus he was French Canadian. A person can get away with an awful lot of dumb with that accent.

I think it's spelled unliterate.

Quebecois may sound a whole lotta dumb, but they're like chameleons, man. I'd give anything to speak French fluently just so I could bastardize it with English infusions.

I'd love to have played for Demers. Je serais son left-wingerrrrr.

I wonder if this is the first time in history somebody admitted being illiterate in a book they supposedly co-wrote

It's impressive that he was able to do so well without reading - he must be a very sharp cookie (or a very vicious former hockey player, or both).

They have a lower chilbirth mortality rate, too. Do they still have 100% organic agriculture, or have we Monsantoed that?

You may have missed the memo on this one: I think illiteracy is both sad and hilarious-----sometimes it takes satire of a social disease to make it relevant as a tragedy. To wit: LooGar and I have taken it upon ourselves to constantly mention what we consider the two true public health epidemics in this country: Child molestation and Crystal Meth.

Oftentimes we might mention these things in a lighthearted manner, but don't get it twisted man----I'm dead serious about this shit as true problems affecting America.

And you can throw illiteracy into that category as well.

Sometimes biting satire can be a means of raising social conciousness.

And BTW, big ups on your work in adult education, but don't ever give me literacy rates from fucking Cuba as opposed to the U.S. It's only going to provoke an argument that you can't win.

And Chuck D is right (and I've said it before myself): Post more.

Yeah, they just "make their mark" on the marriage liscence and its all squared away.

Then they reproduce and pretend to read to their kids until the kids are old enough to notice that the book that Daddy is reading out of is upsde down. Then their kids either start smoking meth, molesting little children, fucking or killing animals or some combination thereof.

But believe me, its always worse in Eastern Europe.

Sadly, my boss is pretty close to illiterate. He somehow managed to work his way up the corporate ladder, get a job as VP of a major market research company, and then start his own company. Lucky for him, he has a partner. He rutinely asks us how to spell words like "tomorrow," can't type, and knows nothing about how to use a computer. His "proposals" consist of chicken scratches on a sheet of paper that he hands to one of us to type.

I couldn't have said it better. I find it hilarious in a sick sad way. Kurtz is right to give you big ups for what you do...we just make everything into a joke, mang.

And he is also right about CUBA..seriously.

Oh, and Andy, there is a certain state senator here that I would qualify as "barely literate"
