Anything Kozelek does sounds like a soundtrack for a suicide... but it's the sweet in bittersweet that keeps me coming back.

This is one of the most beautiful yet depressing songs I've ever experienced.

Depeche Mode, Swans, Smiths, Joy Division ("Decades" being the exception) I love but they don't really depress me that much

I guess there's a distinction between music that's depressed sounding and music that makes one depressed. Not much makes me depressed, but I like a lot of music that's called depressing.
But not when the artist take themselves too seriously and wallow in their self-loathing without a sense of humor about it.

Another tune that could be labeled depressing, but I'd rather call it a genius piece of music. Absolutely gorgeous track. This is BY FAR my favorite ambient release this year [actually in the past 5 years].

Peter Gabriel's Wallflower is pretty tragic yet hopeful

Some Tindersticks, definitely. I listened to "My Oblivion" off of Waiting for the Moon three times today.

Velvet Underground "Jesus" sound like the last thing you'd listen to before taking all the pills.

A friend of mine had a tape called The Happy Tape which was full of things like Abba and "The Lonely Goatherd" from The Sound of Music. So I made her The Miserable Tape, which was all of the happiest sounding songs with the most depressing lyrics. I can't remember too many off the top of my head, but: Richard & Linda Thompson "The Little Beggar Girl" and "The Sun Never Shines on the Poor"; Elton John "I Think I'm Going to Kill Myself" (complete with tap dance break); Matthew Sweet "The Ugly Truth"; Nick Lowe "Marie Provost"...

For some reason The Posies song, "Coming Right Along" off of their album Frosting On The Beater always puts me in a sad, pensive mood.

So bleak sounding.

Anyone know what I'm talking about? When I hear it I feel like crying.

I love Hindle Wakes by In The Nursery for its melodicism and lyrical beauty, but when I played it for someone else, she asked me how I could listen to it, it was so sad...
