I could've sworn that I saw kochalka post about his new potential work gig last night. Did it disappear?

Good luck to you too. The searching / interviewing / quitting current job / starting new job process is probably my least-favorite experience in the world.

Be careful out there guys.

The job market is like Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome these days.

I should know. I've been looking for a while now and I've been the equivalent of Max after recieving his "Gulag" punishment:

Got offered a job that would require me to move to Oman. I could take my kid and it's a significant raise, but it's still Oman. Initially I was told I have to make a decision by Monday, but now they have given me an extra week. So, I figure I will drink my way through the decision making process these next couple of days as I really have no idea what to do.

Yeah, they changed the time constraints so I reposted.

Yeah. It's frustrating. I've been with certain "company" for awhile now so am due for an overseas type position. I knew it would come up within the next year and right now projected openings are Muscat Oman, Islamabad Pakistan, and somewhere in Nigeria. None of these fall into my realm of expertise (Latin America specifically, though have some experience in SE Asia (PI, Malaysia, Indonesia). So, I feel kind of like it's a waste to send me somewhere that I have to relearn everything (language being the biggest concern, though I would love to learn Arabic, still...). Was hoping either Colombia or Panama would come open but such is not the case. So, my options are to say no, and probably not get another shot at a field site/promotion for a ridiculously long time, or just suck it up and go. Like I said, I don't know. I don't know what's best for me or my kid (I would love to raise my kid at least for a few years in an Arabic culture, that would be rad in my opinion). In addition, the proximity of Oman to Iran is a bit worrisome to me. Like I said, I don't know, hence it is 11:48 here and the Shipyard IPA is already flowing (probably not the best approach, but it's all I can do right now).

One thing is for certain, you'd make a shitload of money. How long would you have to be in Oman for?

2 years with possibility of opting for a 3rd. And yeah, the money would be great.

Ooooh yeah. I forgot you do that for a living. Oman seems pretty routine, in that light.

Isn't Oman one of the stricter arab countries, in terms of Muslim law? Obviously I don't know much about it.

Probably a better choice than Pakistan, though. What about Nigeria?

From what I've read the past couple of days it's certainly transitioning. Seems to be taking cues from Qatar and UAE. There are 3 (at least that I found) hotels now that actually serve alcohol and refined sugar, which is kind of sad to me (though I'm sure this will be a plus if I end up going there). But for the most part, does seem to still be very traditional.

I initially thought I might be able to bargain for Nigeria (again the language thing, figured it may be easier to transition from Portugese and Spanish to French), but I wouldn't be able to take my daughter there as there is no approved daycare or school facilities in the immediate area. Also, some concern about the general safety of my daughter there. Which to me seems ridiculous. If Colombia were an option I could take my daughter there and somehow my employer feels there would be less of a targeted risk there than in Nigeria. Not sure how they come to these conclusions.
