-first off, i know there are a few fans of gabriel garcia marquez here on the board. here's a link to a very well written review of his latest novel "memories of my melancholy whores" by john updike:

http://www.newyorker.com/critics/conten ... rbo_books1

here's garcia's usual most excellent first sentence:
"the year i turned ninety, i wanted to give myself the gift of a night of wild love with an adolescent virgin."

-secondly, an illustrated version of "the elements of style" has just been published. i was pissed when i first heard this and think i'm still a little pissed. the drawingss are done by maira kalman--that's mrs. tibor kalman--to all of you graphic designers. they're playful and washy in gouache, i believe and make me feel like i'm reading at a third grade level when i open it. i DID like the fact that it was hard bound although i still love my little dog earred $4.95 paperback from college. in any case it doesn't matter because i still couldn't place a comma properly if my life depended on it.

marquez in general, yes, all the way. His late-period feelings of sexual entitlement, kinda icky. What adolescent virgin wants her first sexual experience to be with a creepy 90 year old who only wants her because she won't know if he's any good or not?

true some of his characters are quite lecherous. i find it more sad and pathetic and well, i could go on and on and on. i think his novels concern time--the passing of time, people stuck in time, the history of places... in any case i don't want to give away much of the book but it's prettty good so far. AND it's only 120 pages if you're too afraid to get involved in one of his 3-400 pagers.

Now THAT is an interesting mix...
MairaKalman and Elements of style!

I agree with you re: the third grade thing. I'll have to go check it out, I'm curious what KIND if illustrations she did for it.

I just looked it up on Amazon.

it's typical of her charming children's books. she illustrates sentence examples from the elements of style.

it's pretty but, eh...maybe i just have to get used to it. i may actually buy it just for the size and hardcoverness.

I did see it on Amazon for like $16 I may just get it for the same reason. The illustrations will be icing.

I do kind of like her work, but after the first fifteeen of her books I think I'm over her. Am I a snob? or a lowlife?

You know I did a search for Tibor and didn't realize who he was! I didn't learn about him in all my design classes at Pratt. Now I've got some catching up to do.

not a snob or lowlife. she's a one trick pony.

TIBOR ROCKS.
i heard him speak and was blown away. a lot of his thinking is theoretical and not always applicable or practical to the real world-we all need to "work" for a living and cannot maintain lofty ideals. but the guy really makes you think. one of his main deals was that designers should not look for inspiration in design annuals and magazines or from other designers. be interested in the world and let that become part of your make up and then do the work. i'm hardly elequent but i hope you get the idea.

i hear he was a real bastard to work for but m&co really did do some of the most innovative work of the 80's. (see talking head album covers for starters) maybe you didn't hear about him at pratt because he was not well liked in all circles. he really called a spade a spade and institutions like communication arts didn't always take to it lightly.

one more thing:
if you search him on google there's a good interview of him that ran on salon.com a few years back. oh yeah, he's dead now.

Because I always picture Gabrielle, Freddy Garcia and Rafael Marquez
whenever Gabriel Garcia Marquez is mentioned.

Man, I wish I had Bodoni.

You have given me the idea to steal all the fonts I don't have at home off this university computer although Bodoni is lacking from this one too. Berlin Sans FB; yes please!

frutiger=classic.

Actually pretty much anything by Matthew Carter I'm down with. I met him in college, and he is so modest, in yet her could be the greatest typographer ever.

The first line of Marquez sounds kind of like the first line of Anthony Burgess' Earthly Powers--

"It was the Afternoon of my eighty-first birthday, and I was in bed with my catamite when Ali announced that the archbishop had come to see me."

yeah I bought that book as a freshman in high school at my private schools booksale.

Are we talking about body copy? By which foundry? I like Adobe's a little more than Bitstream. Although the Linotype version has a certain elegance that the others just don't quite get. That is, if you really are in to the classics you can't beat Garamond, And like Ayah said, Bodoni, Now there's a font!

Yep! Bachelor of Industrial Design.

Long story...Do you REALLY want to hear it?

PM me and I'll spill. It would probably put this board to sleep.

I do miss NYC though. I woulda stayed but got a great offer in CA. so we loaded up the truck and moved to, no not Beverly, S.F. then L.A. then Madtown.

Nope, in college studied graphic design. Just retained some info for a change.

Western MD. Want to move up north but alas, no job offers.
