Impressions?
Those of you to whom I sent a copy of Boulders...
This is the place for you to post your impressions.

Yay?
Nay?
What the hell is this?

I'm curious to know.
And I'm anxious for the board to see that these bizarro albums I'm championing are not just that I'm completely insane.

If I had the time/money I would go nuts in the studio just like Roy (much to HoP bassist Tim's dismay).

So... whadddya think?
I know that at least one of you got it.

If Roy Wood and Shrimp Boat ever teamed up Todd would just explode like a really excited suicide bomber.

Hate it?

Nope, don't have it yet, Todd. I'll be posting about it as soon as I do.

I do not have a burner of my own and had to ask a friend to make copies for me. Therefore, I had to limit the number of copies offered to the first few people who responded.

And, actually, only 3 people did respond.
But I did make a general announcement about a month ago.

Sorry, Todd. I should've spoken up earlier. I've given it only one spin since receiving it, but I liked it. Track 3 called me over to the stereo to turn it up, but that's all I got right now. Unfortunately, your parcel arrived the same day I rec'd other disks so it's been on the backburner. Not deservedly so - I'll revisit this over the weekend and shoot you out my thoughts soonafter.

The DIY cover art is tip-fucking-top! Goes with the music. You should've had the boys add some color with their jumbo crayons, though.

Actually, that is the actual cover.
See?:

But... thanks.
I would have drawn it if I had thought of it and had the chance.

EDIT:
The AllMusic review for those of you who are curious:
Stephen Thomas Elerwine Wrote:
An intricate, deliberately idiosyncratic record, assembled piece by piece, Boulders perfectly captures Roy Wood's peculiar genius, more so than anything else he recorded. All of his obsessions are here -- classical music, psychedelia, pre-Beatles pop, pastoral folk ballads, absurdist humor, studio trickery, and good old-fashioned rock & roll -- assembled in a gracefully eccentric fashion. Some listeners may find that eccentricity a little alienating, but it's the core of Wood's music. He wrote tuneful, accessible songs, but indulged his passions and weird ideas, so even the loveliest melodies and catchiest hooks are dressed in colorful, odd arrangements. The marvelous thing is, these arrangements never sound self-consciously weird - it's the sound of Wood's music in full bloom. Never before and never again did his quirks sound so charming, even thrilling, as they do on Boulders. As soon as "Songs of Praise" reaches its chorus, a choir of sped-up, multi-tracked Roys kick in, sending it into the stratosphere. All nine tunes unwind in a similar fashion, each blessed with delightfully unpredictable twists. It's easy to spot the tossed-off jokes on the goofy "When Gran'ma Plays the Banjo," but it may take several spins to realize that the percussion on "Wake Up" is the sound of Roy slapping a bowl of water. Boulders is a sonic mosaic -- you can choose to wonder at the little details or gaze at the glorious whole, enjoying the shape it forms. Wood has an unerring knack for melodies, whether they're in folk ballads, sweet pop or old-fashioned rock & rollers, yet his brilliance is how he turns the hooks 180 degrees until they're gloriously out of sync with his influences and peers. Boulders still sounds wonderfully out of time and it's easy to argue that it's the peak of his career.

Okay, I've been listening to this album quite a bit in the last week or so. It's awesome, of course, but we already knew that going in. Back in the days of vinyl this album was one of my (many) holy grails - with typical record label wisdom it had been deleted almost immediately upon release, so while inferior platters (by Roy Wood standards) like Mustard were in used bins everywhere, Boulders was impossibly hard to find. So thanks, Pop Todd, for finally filling this particular hole in my collection.

That AMG review is spot on. This album is like Pet Sounds for people who like rock and roll. There are a lot of odd production flourishes - and that waterbowl percussion on "Wake Up" is a stroke of brilliance - but the tricks and quirks never overshadow the fact that the songs are ALL solid. It's probably the most consistent set that Wood ever put out. Moreso than even his work with ELO, you can hear on Boulders what Wood was aiming for when he first devised the plan to mix classical orchestration with rock and roll - his use of the cello, for instance, isn't in the service of dramatic weight (like the typical rock orchestration), it's more as a rhythm instrument, goosing the momentum (and even taking a solo at one point). I love the sound Wood gets from the saxophone - a ridiculously low-end fart that rumbles under the mix - it's like a baritone sax just wasn't deep enough for him and he personally mated a sax with a tuba. And "Rock Down Low" (the track #3 mentioned in a post above) succeeds at being the exact sort of rocker that ELO could never pull off.

So thanks again, Todd. Now all I need is a remastered CD version of Wizzard's Brew and my Roy Wood quest will be complete.

Glad you dig it, Andrew.
If I made my Listmania! today, it would almost certainly be on there.

Oh, and I do have another Roy rarity with me today...
The Move live at the BBC in 1967-68 (pre-Lynne). It's a pretty awesome set: 26 songs.
