Anybody heard this yet or plan on picking it up? I was just previewing it on iTunes and it sounds pretty interesting. I can't really tell of it's a typical Rubin production, but it sounds spare.

KCRW just played a tune off it and the song was forgettable.

"Captain Of A Shipwreck" was the song name.

Isn't this just like a reissue of his greatest hits album or something? I have something named similarly to this on vinyl....

i have it...listened to it a few times....

my overall take:

great sound: rick ruben IS a genius

great voice: neil diamond has a GREAT voice

mediocre songs: seriously...they are just okay..which would be okay with the above observations if:

shit lyrics: they are just really really bad imo...like he didnt take time to polish 'em....which may be okay, but this is being heralded as a singer/songwriter album.....

my advice: go buy crooked fingers' dignity and shame if you havnt already

Its Rubin + Diamond, did you really think I wouldn't be all over this?

I picked it up on the way home from work. I'm half way through right now and I think it's pretty great actually. His voice sounds immediate and warm. Strangely I think I can hear some of his more excessive vocal stylings wanting to break out, but he reeled them in or more appropriately, Rubin did. The results are very satisfying so far. And it's spare too. Not American Recordings spare, but minimal. This is late night/early morning listening.

EDIT: Fucking cd is SKIPPING on me! Now I gotta take the fucker back. This chaps my ass, I was really getting into this album.

I bought this, and being the owner of quite a number Neil vinyl, I had to pick this up. I'm really impressed, but I doubt that the fame that found Cash after Rubin produced him, will find Diamond.

The album is, for the most part more organic than his earlier output, with a few of the songs definitely harkening back to his songwriting talents behind the scenes. Delirious Love is definitely the standout track. The first three tracks are mostly acoustic slow movers, but definitely ramp you up into the rest of the tracks.

In the liner notes, it was interesting to see what a long process the writing to recording phase was. I really wish I could've been a fly on the wall for the sessions in which Rubin and Neil sat down and listened to records.

"Look, Neil, I just think that 'Jazz Singer' was a terrible soundtrack."
"What?! Come on! It had "Coming To America" on it."

Don't expect any "Sweet Caroline" or "Kentucky Woman", or even a "Shiloh" on this record. Its just Diamond doing what he knows best, and thats him picking on his guitar and writing some damn fine songs.

As a sidebar, my cd kind of skipped while playing on my pc, through that damned media player packaged with it. Haven't played the entire thing on a stereo yet, perhaps I should...

My problem is the manufacturer's fault. I neglected to notice that the fucking plastic anti-theft device was stuck to the BOTTOM of the cd tray!! So every cd at the store I was at is scratched and unlistenable. So now I have to wait until at least next week to hear the rest of the fucker.

Isn't that a nutcruncher? I hate that, same thing happened when Virgin Suicides came out on DVD with me. EVERY one in the store...scratched.

<<I can't really tell of it's a typical Rubin production, but it sounds spare.>>

I have to admit I take a perverse interest in seeing just how squashed and pumping Rubin and his masterer can take an album like this. We hear how Rick the guru cajoled Neil to play his acoustic guitar and now we'll get to hear just how unnatural he and Meller can get it to sound on CD. Rap and metal is one thing, but what exactly is the point of going for max volume on 'unplugged' type deals? It's truly bizarre.

If this makes even half the impact that Johnny Cash's last Rick Rubin produced disc made, Rick can probably expect to start seeing a line of "aged long forgottens" piling up at his door begging him to bring out that cool "human" element in their music that everyone's talking about. Next thing you know, somewhere down the line we will have Richard Marx's "most revealing recording yet." Or not...

I can't wait to hear what Rubin does with the Dixie Chicks. Seriously.
