O.k., so i've been planning on moving to L.A. after this school year, so mid june of 06. I've also considered moving to Austin, TX, Nashville, and NYC. I want to make a living as a bassist supporting a touring act, as a studio musician, or both. That's why L.A. was at the top of the list. The problem is that moving to L.A. scares the shit out of me. Everytime i go there i get stressed out. I'm thinking about Austin, cause alot of players get picked up out of there for tours and shit, and mostly because it doesn't scare me one bit.

So there's this orchestra job for a middle school in Austin that opens 1/2/06... Do i apply and try and move there a half a year earlier, or do i suck it up and go to L.A. in June?

God i'm such a fucking chicken. I know the answer is go to L.A.

Naw Phil,
Move to Austin and split rent with me when I move there this spring.
This is not a hard decision.

you mean, ditch chicago, go to austin, then move to l.a.?

moving is pricey son.

is 6 months long enough to make an impact in A-TX?

I'd rather live in Austin than LA but I think that LA would be great - go for awhile and check it out.

It's normal to be frightened. It's a huge step to move to another state.

If I were you, I would really consider NYC as well since you have people you know here (Aaron, Katie, etc.) who can support you in a time of need. You know the deal...

A distinct possibility, but one that depends on applying to this position, and getting this position...

This is the right answer..some things just ain't meant to be, man.

I have been "meaning to" move to ATL since after the 2002 election, and it just hasn't happened. I met a girl who lived in ATL and she ended up moving to Montgomery...SOMETHING didn't want me to move to ATL, and things like this just confirm we did the right thing.

way tempting, but how long will they be there? If any NYC musicians want to weigh in on this, that'd be appreciated.

So if i don't get the job, then go to L.A. cause A-TX wasn't meant to be?

Yeah, especially if you get a job in LA...

and seriously, Austin would be much more awesome than LA...AND I have a much better chance of getting to Austin than to LA (or Chi-town for that matter) to come visit ;)

You'll do well wherever you go. A little fear isn't a bad thing when you're moving across the country.

Since LA is where you really think you should be, I'd say try that route first. If it doesn't work out you can always move to Austin, NYC, or back to Chicago later.

What's your gut instinct telling you? LA? Then I think you should give LA a shot. It's not like you'd be going in blind, as there are plenty of LA-area obners around for hijinks/support/advice.

Uhh I think this is a sign damnit.

I say try for the position in AUstin, try your luck there, and if things pick up there, then you may not even have to think about L.A. at all.

looks like only T.A. positions, i don't want to be an assistant.

Anyone hiring for anything in L.A.? Anyone have any connections for a lowly music teacher?

I willing to try anything outside of education.

For what it's worth...

I lived in both NYC and grew up in LA. Both are livable. money not being an object I would pick NYC! GREAT art atmosphere. easy to get around with out a car. Museums, art, lots of energy!

LA can stress you out but it depends on where you live and if you have a car and how far you drive. It CAN be a great place to live but from my experience hard to get out. cuz it's kind of easy to just go with it from year to year. next thing you know five-ten years have gone by. If you get the right gig money can be good but rent and housing is steeep!

I have friends that live in Austin and just love it. College town and lots of bright young hip people.

And Austin is unheard-of cheap to live, especially given all there is to do.

I don't work in a cubicle, rather a crappy apt with an office where the living room should be..and I only work with one other person, but he is so incompetent I do most everything not involving making coffee.

What's stressing you out about LA and how many times have you been out here? Don't tell me you've been making regular trips and not letting us angelino obners know.

To me, it seems like an easy answer. If the reason you are moving is to better your chances of making a career in music, there's no better place to be than LA. If you move to Austin and things don't work out, you'll always be thinking what if....

Life gets complicated quickly and there are always reasons not to pursue your dreams. You're young and single..pursue those dreams now while you can. You can always move to Austin later if things don't work out (which seems unlikely given your talent).

Besides, LA is a great place to live if you take advantage of all it has to offer from unparalleled live music (including 52 Brion shows/year) , great weather, mountains, beaches, desert, and women who aren't looking to get married at a young age. Go West young man.

And if you find yourself stressed in LA, just live by the beach...there ain't nothing that a walk on the beach won't cure.

Yeah, I agree with the dr. Just plunk down a few mil and live by the beach. No worries, no stress.
