Zeth Lundy, one of the writers for PopMatters offers this top twenty. Fairly predictable.

Still haven't figured out what this one's supposed to sound like (riyl-wise):

9. American Music Club, Love Songs for Patriots (Merge)

Yeah, I'm interested in hearing this. I missed out on them when they were puttin out records before.

I get the sense that they're kind of folk/rock/americana type stuff with some good songwriting. I know lead songwriter Mark Eitzel gets a lot of praise.

Jeez:Folk, rock, country, punk. Hard to catergorize. I want to say Elvis Costello, but, that's not quite right. Great songs. Great lyrics. Eitzel's vocals can be a bit over the top, for me, on some songs.

Haven't heard the new one, but you can't go wrong with the older stuff:California, Everclear, Mercury. San Francisco.

thanx. after the "2004 top 3 contest" winner, i'll have room for 1 more cd i think. looking for the right last one. right now i'm debating between this and the roots "tipping point".

i also have an emusic subscription that lets me at 40 more songs as of dec12, so i might try nick cave or mark lanegan through that (plus interpol's antics are now available).

If it's interesting to anyone, the Onion's top albums list came out. It's not one list, but several writers doing their own lists.

I thought so too. I also thought The Velvet Teen sounded interesting from the descriptions in the Onion's list. Does anyone know anything about them?

<$16 for two used CDs? That seems quite possible. I try never to buy a used CD for more than $8...

Oh yeah, I wasn't thinking about online shopping. I don't do much of that unless I have big discounts.

i did ALL my xmas shopping online this year. other than the hassle of forgetting to have the shit delivered to my office instead of my house it's been pretty nice. and used books are hella cheap.

Okay, I actually do that too, and then have them shipped to the recipient if they are far away. I guess I just don't buy a lot of music online.

Here is Stylus Mag's Top 40 singles of '04.

Note that they've only posted 40-11 (they're posting 10 a day each day this week, culiminating in the unveiling of each writer’s individual list on Friday).

This is going to be the closest battle ever for my top spot. #1 and #2 are really duking it out steel cage match-style.

This one is a surprise because if I think about the men who buy the magazine then this doesn’t really fit the image. Admittedly, I have not really looked at it for a few years but can’t imagine that it's changed that much. So either Pitchfork is taking over the world or indie really is the music of choice. Hard for me to believe when you turn on MTV2 and they are still playing the same crap. Someone did point out, I think Bort, that the cross over singles were really strong this year. Albums, on the other hand, were quite strong just not as many knockouts as the last few years seem to have.

At least Pitchfork can’t name Echoes best album this year. So unless they pick Antics as number one than they can’t screw that up.

GQ is now more like Playboy was for most of its existence...It tries to tell you what the best shit out there is. Also, it has been consistently my favorite magazine since the redesign.

Of course, I can't afford to buy any of the shit they tout,at least fashion wise, but it the quality of journalism and writing and the quasi liberal bent make it something to look forward to.

Modest Mouse has but the reason it's not on the list is it was one good song and 15 shite ones.

That's just wrong! Hehehe, it's true that UNCUT didn't like it that much, and it's also true that I don't find myself going back to it as often as it deserves, but when I do play it I'm struck by how good the album is overall. Not really any shit songs at all. Yeah, I still love the last two albums like I'll never love this one, but I don't understand your comment at all. Don't know where yet to put it on my best of the year list, but I've a feeling that it'll wind up comfortably in the top 20. My biggest complaint was with the over the top and radio friendly compression (and even heavy clipping) of the sound to make it as loud as possible. So many good sounding CDs being wrecked these days by the idiots in charge of production.
