it's just an interview, not a job. I can always say no.

Personally, I don't think so. Texas takes care of it's teachers. Austin is a cool city. The south is the best part of USA, and I think you'll like it.

However, you probably won't become a world famous session bassist like you could in L.A.

and then they can always throw a bunch of money at you so you can't say no, and then you won't be able to turn them down, and then the next thing you know you are hanging out with a different obner crowd, meeting hot Texas women.

Teaching is just a way to finance my bass playing hobby.

I have to figure out how to make the jump from teacher/player to just player.

What's gonna to happen is Willie Nelson will be playing ACL and his bass player will get food poisoning. Through a series of outlandish but comically fortuitous events, involving mistaken seat numbers and a run in with an unfriendly Lee Majors impersonator, you'll be in the right place at the right time and Willie will ask you to take the stage. Then the wheels'll start turning and before you know it you're second bassist on his tour of Chile and parts of Ecuador.

Then, with fame secured, you'll settle in for a nice run scoring incidental music for Animal Cops Houston or something.

Grab the brass balls, Phil.

Austin is the live music capital of the US and the weather is better than Chicago. I think you wouldn't have any problems getting gigs there. Plus you get SWSW, ACL, 6th Street, UT longhorn coeds...yes indeed  Jump on it if you get the chance.

Change of scenery works well, even if its not the change of scenery you're hoping for, as far as getting your priorities straight.

Go to Austin. If you hate it, you can always move to LA, or back to Chicago, or Goa, or wherever the fuck. But it will proabably do you some good, as you seem kinda miserable now.

What about Leland Sklar and Tony Levin?

Their hair/lack of hair respectively stand out from the bassy pack.

Oh, I thought the Wed night gig was that Karoke thing or just a covers band or something.
I'm surprised Liquid Soul plays a gig where they only get $5 a night.

Is Graham just dormant, Phil? Is that project still planning a possible weekend in Michigan? Is open mic still going on? I never hear from that guy anymore.
