I was listening to it this weekend, and I think you're right. Every song is fucking awesome.

It's close with the Strokes - Room on Fire, White Stripes - WBC, Constantines - Shine a Light, and Ike Reilly - Salesman and Racist for me. Drive By Truckers - Dirty South is up there too.

I gotta listen to that lucero again.

I think when it came out it made my top 20 for the year, but I find myself playing it more than any other album.

Kids in Philly & 20,000 Streets Under the Sky by Marah are also pretty damn good.

Damian Jurado - Postcards & Audio Letters... stretches the definition of 'album', 'best', and 'definitive', but so be it.

Plus, we're only six - five, if you want to be "picky" - years in. Perchance something in the next eighteen months, two years will blow my head right off.

5 - The Glands
4 - Notwist - Neon Golden
3 - The White Stripes - White Blood Cells
2 - Unwound - Leaves Turn Inside You
1 - Spoon - Girls Can Tell

Walkmen - Everyone Who Pretended to Like Me is Gone

followed by in some order:

Jon Brion - Meaningless
Tribalistas S/T
Spoon - Kill the Moonlight

I prefer to think there's about 10 legitimate candidates for fifth place then to actually commit to one.

Drive By Truckers - Decoration Day but yeah, a lot of the ones that you guys mentioned could be in there as well.

The death of good music has been greatly exaggerated once more.

The Glands! What a weirdo ;) Wonder if they're ever gonna get back together?

That Unwound album is a dark horse, huh? The more you listen, the more it gets under your skin. Kind of like that Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons that another mentioned and that I also love. But does that opening couple minutes of drone bother you at all on the Unwound first disc? Or do you skip it? You probably have the LPs, right?

Grandaddy - The Sophtware Slump.

Wilco's YHF and the infamous Kid-A are great, but Sophtware Slump has logged more time in my CD player than both combined.

I remember awkwardly buying this album from the band's singer when he worked at Big Shot Records in Athens.

'twas good, tho.

Yeah, love that one myself. 2000 is really a tough year to call for me because I have so many favorites that get a lot of play...

Modest Mouse - The Moon & Antarctica
P.J. Harvey - Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea
Black Heart Procession - Three
Grandaddy - Sophtware Slump
Blonde Redhead - Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons
Yo La Tengo - And then nothing turned itself inside-out
Giant Sand - Chore of Enchantment
Wheat - Hope and Adams
Twilight Singers - Twilight As Played By the Twilight Singers
Mekons - Journey to the End of the Night

...just to name a few ;)

Guess I'll go with these in no particular order.....

Ween - White Pepper (Just a perfect slick pop/rock album. In another era, this would have had about 7 or so hit singles.)

Grandaddy - Sumday (I like Sophtware Slump but this is better imo.)

Fiona Apple - Extraordinary Machine (Transcended my expectations and actually turned out to be my fav album this year.)

Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (I keep returning to this no matter how hard I try to peel the layers off of A Ghost is Born.)

Radiohead - Kid A (I'm starting to like this more than OKC.)

There has been such great music released in this new millenieum.

Some of my faves:

Mercury Rev - All Is Dream
Steve Wynn - Here Come the Miracles
Spoon - Kill the Moonlight
John Vanderslice - The Life & Death of an American Fourtracker
Mastodon - Remission
Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
Sigur Ros - Agaetis Byrjun
Modest Mouse - The Moon & Antarctica
Eels - Daisies of the Galaxy

All of the above have withstood the limited amount of time, since their release dates, for me.

Cheers,

audiobill
