That's my dad. That's why I go default and buy him pint glasses/Guinness signs/good bottles of wine or whiskey.

Get the fucker a bottle of Opus One and some fine glasses and then chug the wine out of a styrofoam cup with him.

for the last 4-5 years I have sent out a specific list with specific things, and everyone still goes freelance on me, so I asked all family members to donate to charity in my name. I'll get something cool from FEMGAR and Bloor, though.

The actual design isn't as good as the original concept, but still.

Last year I bought my mom CD's of some of the "records" she used to love when she was younger. Frankie Valli, Neil Diamond, Mario Lanza, well, you get the picture. Then I wrote a note about my memories of her listening to the records when I was little, and that I would always think of her when I heard those songs.

Warning: If your mom is a big blubberer (and whose isn't), you might want to tell her to read the note in private.

Edit: This probably works for dads too, but my dad's a prick.

this is cool and very sweet.
my kids will never do this as they are otherwise occupied being self centered teenagers taking me for granted. as they should be.

Mario Lanza was kind of an "opera" teen idol in the 40's(?) My mom loved the movie "The Student Prince".

Don't be surprised if your kids do this some day. My daughter was going through the "blame mom for everything" stage when she bought me the soundtrack to "Charlie Brown's Christmas" and put a sticky on it.

So this is actually her idea that I stole.

Cool. Yeah she's into books A LOT. But she tends to lean more towards books that are kind of "artsy".

She REALLY digs the McSweeney's Quarterly books. Have you ever heard of them?

If you really want to score points, tuck a love letter of your own into one of the book's envelopes.

Thanks pal, I do my best.

I had hoped this thread might be useful, but it really sucks so far. More ideas people. We are paying you to be thoughtful and creative here. Now lets redouble our efforts and get back to work.

Fairy books, indeed.

for hardcore car guys only:
Quote:
On an August morning in 1978, French filmmaker Claude Lelouch mounted a gyro-stabilized camera to the bumper of a Ferrari 275 GTB and had a friend, a professional Formula 1 racer, drive at breakneck speed through the heart of Paris. The film was limited for technical reasons to 10 minutes; the course was from Porte Dauphine, through the Louvre, to the Basilica of Sacre Coeur.

No streets were closed, for Lelouch was unable to obtain a permit.

The driver completed the course in about 9 minutes, reaching nearly 140 MPH in some stretches. The footage reveals him running real red lights, nearly hitting real pedestrians, and driving the wrong way up real one-way streets.

Upon showing the film in public for the first time, Lelouch was arrested. He has never revealed the identity of the driver, and the film went underground until a DVD release a few years ago.
