I stopped by the liberry today & picked up a couple of discs. One of them in particular looks like shit, as though someone tried to play it on their turntable first. I've picked up CDs on the side of the road that looked better than this one.

How hard is it to treat them gently? Mean people suck. Image

Click on the pic to see a larger version, if you think you can handle it.

I found a cd once that looked like somebody had taken it, case and all, and held it over a lighter until it they practically melted together. People are stupid on many occasions.

You should see the quality of some of the discs here at the campus radio station. Couldn't even get anything beyond track 6 of Extra Width to rip. Ridic.

I rented "Kicking and Screaming" from the local video store 2 days after it was released. The DVD looked like it had been dragged over gravel with someone's foot. Hold the edges, people!

This is why I try to rent DVD movies when they first come out before the general population (aka The Great Beast) begins to handle them.

Seriously, out of the last 10 DVDs I rented from Blockbuster/Drug Mart, at least 8 of them were scratched beyond recognition. I mean, the DVDs were in such bad shape that it couldn't have merely been from people mishandling them - it takes real dedication to damage the discs to the extent that I have seen in rental services.

To be fair, you rented a family film with Will Farrell, so you should just be grateful that no one did this to you.

Plus, Mike Ditka as himself, and "Boo Radley"/"Tom Hagen" as an ultracompetitive senior.

Cinema gold, non?

Which is why I never let anyone borrow my CDs. That includes family, friends, etc. All of my CDs are in absolute mint condition and I intend to keep them that way for decades.

If someone wants to "borrow" one of my CDs, I ask them to give me a CD-R and I simply burn them a copy.

It was surprisingly entertaining, and certainly better than tripe like "Lord of the Rings" or "Austin Powers." Just because a movie has kids in it doesn't mean that it's only for them.

The "indestructible" claim that went around in the 80s was one of the worst things that could happen to CDs. People really do treat them like they're indestructible, when what they should have been told was that they're relatively indestructible compared to the easily destroyed tapes and vinyl.

What really annoys me is how many ridiculously scratched CDs I find used locally. What I don't understand is that when I've attempted to sell them back later on, the store won't take them claiming they're too scratched - when they're exactly as scratched as they were when I bought them (but usually a lot cleaner - I find most scratched discs need a good cleaning because crap builds up in the scratches and can cause read errors.)

Or how about finding food (god, I hope it's just food) smeared on the discs and, worst, the artwork? That is dis-gus-ting. Are they using music as their napkins or something?

Yes, those two can be readily corraled into the same category. Did you follow this up with back to back viewings of "Anchorman" and "Dodge Ball"?

Anchorman was awesome. Dodgeball was pure drivel. And yes, I'd watch Anchorman over LotR any day, too (and I liked LotR - I just don't need to see it again for a long, long time.) But not Dodgeball. I'm still pissed I wasted the time on that, except for the parts with Jason Bateman and "ESPN - the Ocho."

Nope - saw "Anchorman" in the theater (enjoyed it) and caught bits and pieces of "Dodge Ball" on DVD (didn't like it). I never said LOTR and "Austin Powers" were in the same category - just that they weren't enjoyable. What's up with suddenly ANGRY AARON calling me out for renting a Ferrell movie, anyway?

Bowdoin College's, up here in the tundra of Maine. WBOR 91.1 FM. Got a show on Wednesday mornings at 9 if y'all's interested. The webcast sucks right now, since our transmitter's opperating at 15% power, so you probably don't want to start tuning in tomorrow. Linky in case you like to listen to static.

Just thought the sideways cheap shot at LOTR was a little reminiscent of Radcliffe's "this sucks... AND SO DO ARCADE FIRE, WRENS AND RADIOHEAD" approach. Sorry to be snippy. But I don't take back the comment about people grinding you into the gravel like a cd, because I think that was funny, even if you don't really deserve it.

No prob, Aaron. That was just my indirect way of saying that (in my opinion) "Kicking & Screaming" is actually a pretty funny (though wildly unoriginal) flick. I expected nothing and got a 3 star movie.
