Say what you will about Travis, but they're one of my favourite bands. This is exciting news!

Quote:

They're working with Nigel Godrich again
Travis have recorded 20 songs for their new album.

Producer Nigel Godrich is again working with the band, bass player Dougie Payne told fans on the band's official website travisonline.com.

Godrich produced 2001's 'The Invisible Band' and the band's last effort, 2003's '12 Memories'.

Payne said: "We're working in a place called The Hospital. The studio is in a building that houses a members club, two restaurants a TV studio and most dangerously of all a martini bar.

"Thankfully the studio part is on the top floor, nicely separated from all the temptations. We've got about 20 songs recorded. This includes stuff we did in Westside earlier in the year and one tune goes back to the sessions we did with (Brian) Eno last December.

"We've got two weeks in here this time around and reckon most of the time will be spent finishing off those things that need more work but we decided to start off the session with trying a new song.

"This is one written by our friend Suzie Hugg. We've recorded a couple of her songs before ('Reason' and 'Unbelievers' were both B-sides a few of years ago). She is a great writer."

The LP is due for release in 2006.

have to say the schmaltz-factor has been steadily increasing with each subsequent release. i love their debut, the man who, and most of the invisible band, but i didn't buy the last album. if they're not careful the new one will be an album of air supply songs.

I sold all my travis albums, bought the greatest hits cd instead, saved room on my shelf, and got the songs i needed and wanted. *won*

i wholeheartedly third this sentiment.

Yep yep yep. And to my recollection, they never nibbled on Cold Play's wang - they were contemporaries who simultaneously farmed the wreckage of what used to be Radiohead's pop sensibility.

Really, I thought this album almost completely turned me off on this band...and I have been a fan since the Good Feeling days.

It'd be sweet if 12 memories ends up being their sole and complete misfire.

Exactly what happened to me, too. I gave the album at least a dozen spins, somehow found myself unhappier with it every time, eventually sold it, then found that my distaste for 12 Memories soured me on the previous two, too. I feel kinda bad about that, because I really like to look at each album as its own individual release that does not necessarily need to have any attachments of any kind to what came before or what will come after it. But it did, just the same.

12 Memories was definitely more of a "mature" release -- politically-influenced due to the time that it was written and recorded. Not particularly my favourite, but, regardless of that, Travis remains one of the best bands to see live. And as much as I love their recorded sound, their true magic is onstage. Whether you disliked their last release or not and if you've never seen them live, you should do yourself the favour of doing so when they tour again.

you know i thought they overdid it live. they were trying so hard to "rock out", especially the guitar player -- fist-shaking from his stance on top of his stack of amps and everything. kinda lame. maybe it was just 'cause it was contrary to what i was expecting. . .

that being said, i really hope the new album is a return to form

i got the call that my dad was in the hospital at 2 AM after i saw travis. he passed away the next day. the show was great and will be forever etched in my memory, but i don't think i'll be able to see them live again.

I thought the original Moonlight Mile version of "Love Will Come Through" was tremendous. The 12 Memories version added some drums that didn't need to be there. I'd like to hear some more of their covers. Killer Queen and Baby, One More Time are pretty awesome.
