I'm sure this has been covered a million times before, but I couldn't find a good thread about it. I'm looking to buy a set of speakers (and a subwoofer?), moderately priced ($100-$200 range), that deliver quality sound. Any recommendations?

I purchased these a few weeks ago. The sound is superb, and the sub destroys shit.

Are you looking for speakers for yr computer (i.e., powered), or for an actual stereo system?

Here's a thread I started from earlier in the year. If you have a Fry's, check them out since they run these types of specials frequently.

If not, theres always the used or vintage gear route. You can get some great finds if you just know where to look. Check Goodwill or Salvation Army...seriously. You'd be surprised how many audio geeks have found speakers that would sell for hundreds or thousands for $20 or so at the local thrift store.

Are you looking to rock the neighborhood, or just have good SQ?

Either way, if you're talking new in that price range, there's nothing I could recommend. If you want quality sound and have no issues with used, the horizons expand a lot.

Go with 'toze and buy some used. Money can go a long damn way. I'm actually gonna run by the Goodwill today and see what I can scare up.

Try Craigslist, too. I got a decent setup with a cheapo turntable, two Infinity bookshelf speakers and a badass shelf for $45. Add the $15 silver Kenwood receiver from Goodwill and I was in bidness.

Thanks for the recommendations. I'll definitely check out Goodwill and see if I can find a steal.

Yeah, at that price range, you'll go used and maybe wait a little longer for something worth having. There *may* be some decent bookshelf spkrs in that range, but forget a sub too.

Where does one go for used speakers?

Craigslist, Ebay?

IMO, *bay only as a last resort, or if you already know what yr looking for. Craigslist can be productive if yr patient.

Haunt the junk stores, yard sales, and flea markets. And the lesser known junk stores tend to be better places to look. Goodwill and Sally Ann have gotten really wise to pricing vintage gear in the last couple of years. The good stuff rarely makes it to the floor.

Sometimes, you get lucky, sometimes it's a long dry run without finding anything worth a damn. The hunting is part of the fun for me, though. If you don't turn up anything in what you consider a reasonable amount of time, I've got 6 or 7 pair sitting around the house.

Hey 'toze, you happen to have any decent turntables you'd be willing to part with? Mine is starting to crap out on me and I thought I'd ask you here before bringing it up over at AudioKarma.

Only thing I have here right now is a Dual 1237...if this link doesn't work, it's in the AK classifieds:

http://audiokarma.org/ads/showproduct.php?product=107&sort=1&cat=13&page=1

When I go back to FL for the Xmas holidays (12/15), I've got a Denon DP-11 over there that I don't need anymore also.

Check Craigslist. I did a quick search and found these in LA.
http://losangeles.craigslist.org/ele/111326304.html

But there appear to be shitloads in the area. I even saw a really nice set of old DAHLQUIST DQ-18 SPEAKERS. A bit spendy but they are choice and if they are in the condition he says they are seem reasonable. You may even be able to talk him down.
http://losangeles.craigslist.org/ele/111470684.html

Here is a review of the Dahlquists:
http://www.audioreview.com/cat/speakers/floorstanding-speakers/Dahlquist/PRD_119370_1594crx.aspx#reviews

Edit: Too bad I wasn't still in LA I'd pick them up in a heartbeat!

good sub for the price

http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl ... 0-0-3170or

btw, you need to spend more than $300 here to get anything decent...I would target $500 overall to get something that will stand the test of time and give good audio

Again, if you're referring to new eqpt, I'm not sure there's anything for $500 that I'd let in my house. $500 in the used market would get you some hellacious speaks.

These look decent and got a good review on Consumer Reports.

If I raise my price range to $500, does anyone have other good recs?
