'78 and '79 are probably the best two consecutive years, musically, ever.

I went with other for Cheap Trick's "Heaven Tonight".

Oh yeh, now we're talking. My high school grad and first semester of university - and it was facking awesome to experience such a glut of great new music coming out. Felt almost like a war had been won. I think I called myself Blue Milk or Cemetary Polka or something back then.

Anyway, ALL of these deserve consideration for best of the year:

Blondie Parallel Lines
Boomtown Rats A Tonic For The Troops
Cheap Trick Heaven Tonight
The Clash Give 'Em Enough Rope
Bruce Cockburn Further Adventures Of...
The Dead Boys We Have Come For Your Children
Dead Fingers Talk Storm The Reality Studios
Deaf School English Boys/ Working Girls
DMZ s/t
Ian Dury New Boots And Panties
Dave Edmunds Tracks On Wax 4
The Fabulous Poodles Mirror Star
Steve Forbert Alive On Arrival
Generation X s/t
Gruppo Sportivo Mistakes
Dirk Hamilton Meet Me At The Crux
David Johansen s/t
Jules and the Polar Bears Got No Breeding
Nick Lowe Pure Pop For Now People
Plastic Bertrand An 1
Public Image Ltd. First Edition
Radio Birdman Radios Appear
The Ramones Road To Ruin
Genya Ravan Urban Desire
The Rezillos Can't Stand The Rezillos
Tom Robinson Band Power In The Darkness
The Saints Eternally Yours
The Saints Prehistoric Sounds
Patti Smith Easter
Bruce Springsteen Darkness On The Edge Of Town
Johnny Thunders So Alone
Tonio K. Life In The Foodchain
The Tubes What Do You Want From Live?
Tyla Gang Yachtless
Tom Waits Blue Valentine
XTC White Music
XTC Go To

(I'll be curious which ones I've entered the wrong release dates for ;))

This is the first year I've felt that any decision will be both wrong and right. So it's a vote for other (and specifically the Saints Eternally Yours... or David Johansen's solo debut).

Edit: Jeeezuschrist, when I started typing out this post there were NO responses.

With artists like Bruce and the Stones I think it's hard. I don't want every poll to have the same artists in them. Can I omit Nebraska? Born to Run? Greetings from Asbury Park? Of course not. I feel those three are better records than Darkness (although, yes, it's a fine album).

Again, be careful using FnB's site. Heroes was released in October 1977 (and he's actually got the Cars as 1977 even though it's 1978)

I'll rely on you to correct me unless you know of some other more reliable site sorted by year

Tough call between Devo and Elvis Costello. I went with Devo.

I also really like the Talking Heads, Magazine, Rolling Stones, and Wire albums a lot.

I use it too, actually...I'm just always have an allmusic window open at the same time. I should just email him the corrections.

Point taken. My tastes also run a bit toward the conventional than some here. I like most of those albums, but when talking about THE BEST, I tend to default to what I was raised on.

I'll vote for Talking Heads. The best record by a great band.

although not the case relative to the cars or bowie, allmusic is sometimes wrong too. There's also a question as to what release do you use as the official release date. Fast tends to pick the first release date anywhere in the world where allmusic tends to use the US release date assuming it was released in the US.

I am the Cosmos is also fantastic...I get what year it was recorded and released mixed up so I left that out of the running. Its probably better than any of these though.

That's pretty much where I sit. I also play Darkness pretty often, which heavily influences my pick.

Gotta go with Elvis on this one, even though I do some 'Some Girls'. In the other category, I would have also considered Bruce, Cheap Trick and Big Star.
