execution? a D?? rendering a lifelike image of your face out of your frozen blood? it looks very realistic. how can you give it a D? i don't understand your motive behind that.

i'm not 100% sure since i didn't read about it, but it looks like he made a plaster casat and filled the cast with blood. it's a really easy technique (beyond getting all that blood out of you)

I've never been a fan of Marc Quinn's sculpture -- I like his 2-D stuff much better. Blood Head aside...he is a very nice and unassuming guy in real life. When I lived/worked in London, I worked with him quite a bit.

It's got to be pretty famous, because I had heard about it before this, and I don't travel in circles of... art... people.

Since I've been in the midwest I've been out of the loop on newer art so I don't see as much as I used to.

I haven't made up my mind on it yet. I do disagree with Jewels (sorry) Concept-wise it's interesting, thought provoking. Is it good? I don't know I think it would have been so much more fitting if his head had been made of shit. Obvious, but more fitting.

CP, I'll have to agree with you re: execution, it was done well, but doing it so well makes it seem a little too neat and tidy. Maybe it souldn't be.

The popsicle stick idea I do like!

On topic but about another artist. I can't think of his name right now, but he's a photographer that people always fawn over with his Rob Zombie-esque usage of cadavers and various body parts. I just don't get his work.

I actually liked this concept. Very interesting, but from an artist's pov, how the hell did he shape it without it melting?

but why blood? like the comment earlier about it being made of raspberry shaved ice. it very wellcould have been. My feeling is if you are going make a point then make the damn point. say what you want to say. Unless you were told it was made of blood it loses it's meaning doesn't it? It would be just a red raspberry colored frozen head. so what? At this stage it is kind of a hidden joke. you have to be "in the know" in order to understand and get it. This makes art elitist which I don't agree with.

By "hidden joke" are you referring to the fact that if you just saw it in a gallery with no explanation it would be not as impressive? To me it would be equally as interesting but in a different context. If it was Raspberry ice, then you'd be like, "oh someone made a popsicle out of their head. Hmmm...interesting." While with the blood, at least to me, I'm intrigued by the process in which it was made, but also it forces me to think of what is the meaning, etc. I think art school forced me to do this, and its ruined me from just "enjoying" art. Since college it's been critical thinking on something. I have a friend who recently got his master's in english, and once again critical thought has overtaken his enjoyment to just sit down and take something in.

As far as the art being elitist, you make it elitist as you want. I mean, if someone understands the process behind the Mona Lisa and knows little tidbits, does that make it elitist because they know things I don't? I don't follow your reasoning on how because you may or may not know its blood could possibly make it elitist.

I guess the part I find elitist is when you have to know the artist or what he has done to appreciate his art. Here's an example:
At a show on CA a long time ago an artist was commisioned to do a piece. He painted a gray square on the floor. that's it. Uless you knew him or of him that is his piece. What the "average" viewer saw was just a gray square. What the "hip" people saw was a self portrait. The square represented how many square inhes of skin his body had. Only his students and the people that knew him understood this.

Don't get me wrong, I am not one of those people that thinks art is about pretty pictures you hang to match your sofa. But I think it should be self explanatory and should need little if any written justification. I think your message should be done tthrough the art.

The fact that you and I are curious as to how he did it is good. but should the mechanics for the creation ofa piece be paramount or the message? Right now you and I have walked away from this piece and the biggest thing we are asking ourselves is: "How the hell did he do it?" is that as important as WHY? What is he trying to tell me?

But maybe that was his point, you know? The beauty to me is not per se the literal fact of what something is. That's boring. At least in my eyes.

I think we've stumbled into the year one art student, "what is art" lecture. Quick and fast--to me its subjective. One might find Pollack as utter shite, while someone else might find Duchamp amazingly deep.

Christo is another artist I just don't get. Probably feel the same way about him as you do to this piece.

Maybe, I'll have to think about it. It is interesting tho I feel that it didn't go FAR enough.

You're right about the year one lecture. But the same can be said of music LOL. Your comment about art school resonates. I too, feel the same. but I also have little patience with bad art or art that I find almost but not quite there. And I understand that it is subjective.

No, I feel the same as you re: Christo. One wrap is like all the others same thing different location. Although he's diversified now into umbrellas and such.

I know that Ayah doesn't like him but damien hirst's work I find both disturbing and technically interesting. He makes you think about his subjects AND how he did it and also why. Which, love it or hate it, I think it's successful.

Thanks bunny! I had fun discussing this!

Hirst! See I think that that's more pop art if anything, but I really think its a "talk" piece...I'm referring to the cut aways of animals of course.

I agree, this has been an interesting convo. Its most definitely a no-win situation on what is art, what you like, etc.
