And guys, Fear of a Black Planet definitely, absolutely came out in 1990. It takes of Nation of Millions...was 1988. There was no PE record in 1989.

Oh, right. I was thinking of It Takes a Nation when I was looking at AMG. I need another cup of coffee.

In 1989, I would have had a hard time choosing between the Pixies, Disintegration, Stone Roses, and Bob Mould "Workbook." Its "Workbook" that I still love the most 16 years later though so I choose that.

I was wondering when exactly Sundays "Reading, Writing & Arithmetic" came out too because those 4 + it were often on random in my five disc changer but I think its UK release was Jan 1990 making it just miss eligibility.

Paul's Boutique is my favorite beasties album, so therefore gets my vote over Pixies and De La.

I wonder what ever became of my copy of "Workbook"? Used to love that album.

I really though that Peter Murphy's "Deep" came out in '89 but it must have been like Jan. 1990.

pixies.

pretty hate & boutique are close.

i think 89 was bleach too, which is pretty solid considering they hadn't found their sound yet.

This was probably the hardest yet, but in the end I went with the Stone Roses because it's one of the best debuts ever. I love Doolittle, but in the end I decided I'm more of a Surfer Rosa guy. And I New York is a fucking killer record, I love that one almost as much as Loaded. Sometimes more because Doug Yule sucks.

I scored the promo 12" for "The Line Between The Devils Teeth" in mid-autumn of '89 and played the bejeezus out of it on my show every week until the album broke out.

The Scorchers' weakest by far. "Bible and a Gun" is the only thing on it that I find listenable. "Queen Elvis" was when I first began to suspect that this major label A&M deal might not be a good thing for Mssr. Hitchcock, there's very little on QE that I like, although the promo single for "Madonna of the Wasps" has a killer version of "More Than This" on it.

I think "Eye" came out in '90, it was a nifty redemption. After that, Perspex was so-so, and I can't be bothered with him since. His live shows also started to become forced and contrived around this point. I swear, at one show I saw Morris roll his eyes behind the drum kit.

Oh shit, forgot about Automatic.

A lot of these, I discovered in 1990 so I always think of them as having come out then.

Didn't follow music that much in that year, and the early '90s. The only one's I had back then were the Lou Reed, Camper Van Beethoven, The Cure, and I really like all three, Came to Galaxie 500, The Stone Roses and The Pixies later...and all those are great too, but my favorite is the Stone Roses, so that gets my vote with all the others I mentioned really close behind

Oh I agree with that. I'm not saying it should've been on your list as one of the best albums of the year - just that the year itself wasn't a total wash-out.

If you're defending your list, ok then. I think you choose the right ones with the exception of leaving workbook off the list.

But while Don't Tell A Soul may not be in the top 3 or even 4 Mats albums, most bands don't have a single album that good.

Mark Lanegan's "The Winding Sheet" is a great album too that no one's mentioned.

Not really defending the list, perse, I'm just saying that "Don't Tell A Soul" isn't indicative of the quality of releases in 1989. Yes, decent record. Is it great? Not even close. There's a standard a band sets and it's difficult to live up to the high ones.

Even so, on most of these polls, we're coming up with 40-50 worthy candidates between all of us. In 1989, I think we're struggling to even pull together 30-35.
