I think it's pretty cool but I must say she scares the absolute shit out of me at the same time, if that's possible.

i don't understand the bjork comparison. i have heard other people make it. is it just because she is female and has a distinctive voice?

There isn't any similarity other than that both have weird voices and unique lyrics.

She's not that weird. The way some of you were touting her around it's as if Allison Shaw was on Star Search.

Her range and style reminds me more of a white version of the old blues and torch singer standbyes. Lil Green, Billie Holliday and Lu Barker come to mind. Not quite Beth Gibbons but close.

No, Franka came first, and to me will ALWAYS come first. You were right the first time. ;)

Y'all's threshold for weird is pretty low. You've gotta admit. This music is pretty, it's not scary.

I gotta agree -- that "New Weird America" article just sounded like the author was trying to "invent" a genre.

No, I don't see how that could work. And I'd seriously question your sanity if you were to try with this album.

To be fair, The Wire have beeb using that term for a long time now. The dude from BBC isn't trying to invent anything although he's missing the mark a little with his categorizations.

New Weird America has been the term for "free-folk" or "avant-folk" or other variations of freeform, often sprawling and jammy, ramshackle music music made by DIY American bands on semi-legit record labels. It has its roots in Americana and folk and incorporates several other disparate elements from avant-garde noise to Krautrock to free jazz to '60s Psyche rock and others. Besides Sunburned Hand of the Man (mentioned in the BBC article) some other artists included would be No-Neck Blues Band, Jackie-O Motherfucker, Six Organs of Admittance, Tower Recordings, and older acts like Pelt, Sun City Girls, and Jandek.

Okay, then they're trying to expand a definition so it encompasses more than one or two bands.

Or it's "support" copy.

I bought this just from the online hype; haven't been able to get all the way through it yet. It's the voice.

I really like this album, but yes, it took a few spins.

I want to, believe me. OS problems.

At the very least, I'll be on there around Christmas when I'm visiting my parents.

Not that I necessarily have all of that stuff I just namechecked...
:D
