I know there's a few fans of his on this board and I wanted
to share the news:

http://www.mortalmusic.com/bbs/forums/s ... genumber=1

Chris was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in its
advanced stages.

When he canceled his tour 6 months ago, we all tought it was
drugs/booze that did him in again but we never tought it was
this bad.

Just learning this news, I feel like i've been sucker
punched. I've been a fan for more than 10 years now, been
to many many shows, he's the real deal. Un-appreciated
in his lifetime.

This is gonna be a tough one to get over.

I'm ashamed to say I know nothing of Chris, but am sorry to hear of his condition. Terribly sad.

Would someone please post a YSI of one of his songs that would be an essential "listen"?

How about a whole album?

This is 1998's "Dirt Floor". One of the most beautiful acoustic album i've ever heard.

Wow! Depressing.

He did smoke a lot though. Every time I've seen him play it seems like he lights a new cigarette between every song.

CHRIS WHITLEY DIES

CHRIS WHITLEY died Sunday night at the age of forty-five from lung
cancer. The blues singer-songwriter was resting in home hospice care and
surrounded by family when he passed. Whitley got his start in the music
business in New York when producer DANIEL LANOIS (U2, DASHBOARD
CONFESSIONAL) met him in 1990. He released his debut album, "Living With the
Law," one year later on Columbia Records. Whitley released his eleventh
CD, "Soft Dangerous Shores," in July, but was forced to cancel his fall
tour dates in October. His final album, "Reiter In," is scheduled for
release in December.

He had 11 albums and I only remember hearing one of them, and maybe some songs on things like World Cafe and Austin City Limits.

Probably will be another posthumous discovery for a lot of folks.

here's a track from his cover's album called Perfect Day.

I think Rocket House is underappreciated as well.

this is really sad news, the guy was great.

Tis very much a shame. I think I might pull my copy of Rocket House out in tribute.
