did i miss a thread about this or are we just being coy?

saw it yesterday, and i thought it was fucking amazing. i wasn't too sure what to expect with reese witherspoon, but i really enjoyed her in that role. and joaquin simply became cash as the movie progressed. the scene with sam phillips had me choked up, and the folsom prison scene was by far my favorite, although all of the perfomances were fantastic.

the care and detail put into the entire thing really made it special. i loved it.

thoughts?

it was mostly good, although i can't really think of any specific parts to the contrary. however, i think it can be universally agreed upon that the movie cash's are far more attractive than their reality counterparts.

also, (obligatory reference to phoenix's lip thing)

i think it's definitely oscar-worthy. saw it last night and was very impressed by it. i enjoy reese witherspoon and i think this was her best role yet. joaquin did an EXCELLENT job.

the best part was "that elvis talks a lot of poon" and "want a chili cheese fry?"

I liked it a lot, and thought the acting was fantastic. I was a little disappointed because it was really the story of Johnny and June, not of Johnny's life (for instance, they didn't get into Luther's death, his gospel career or his falling out with the Nashville establishment). But I know there's only so much they can do in 2 hours, and it was good.

agreed. i was thinking, "johnny cash was really pulling this much on the road?" it was more believable for joaquin phoenix, but whatever. and reese witherspoon was smokin' hot as a brunette.

i liked it, but thought it went a little long. the performances were the best parts. the folsom prison scene was amazing and it made me want to listen to that album again. my only complaints were little things like the last shot and the depiction of cash's first wife. i guess i was under the impression that june carter was more of a pull, but the film had me thinking that his first wife was as much of a push as june was a pull. again, not really a big deal.

and my friend really liked the fonts, which i believe is the subject of another recent thread.

I thought it was excellent. I never knew Cash was so ingrained in the first wave of rock & roll. He toured with Jerry Lee Lewis, Presly AND Buddy Holly. My my my.

My only qualm with it was that they could have picked a better Elvis. I mean, geez, with all the impersonators out there...

I wish I could've brought a guitar with me to see it last night, without looking like a tool. The whole thing was one telecaster-soaked soundtrack full of the shit I like to play.

Fickers - Ten bucks says you, me-n-the wife, her cousin and her cousin's girlfriend were 5 of the 8 people in the Orpheum last night for the 9:30 showing. We were up in the balcony, and ran into the cousin/girlfriend just by chance.

That movie was pretty damn good. From a music dork standpoint, somebody did their homework on the playing shots. Fingers were in the right spots almost all the time, and the tone.... oy. They didn't go get a new telecaster and a new amp and slap a mic in front of it, they got the ooooold sound. They nailed it. If you know that sound, you know what it takes to do it right, which is nice, old gear. Man, that was a nice surprise. And yes, Joaquin and Reese did amazing jobs singing / playing (she was playing that autoharp).

I give it a 92 out of 100. A little room for improvement, but not too much. Great job.

We had thoughts of "wonder if this'll be sold out" so we got there 30 mins early.

- Nobody there.
- No fuckin beer sales (taps were unguarded, not a soul in sight... soooo tempting).
- Another 6 or 7 people TOPS showed up before screentime. Which was cool.

I thought it was okay. Not great and not bad. Reese Witherspoon did a better job than Jaoquin . In my opnion the whole movie was dragged down by trying to tell a couple of strories and not really telling one at all. I don't know if really explored any part or truly depicted any part of Cash's life. His love for June was defintely the driving piece, but it didn't seem flushed out. I can't say that I came away with any perspective other than trivial knowledge of early rock'n'roll.

I thought Waylon Payne was awesome in a small role as Jerry Lee Lewis. Saw an interview with him and seemed pretty cool too.

I saw it yesterday as well and I gotta say, I agree with you on about 85% of this. I thought it was OK. I mean both Reese and Pheonix were awesome with their parts. But I didn't come away from the movie like "Damn that fucking ruled, I will buy that when it hits DVD".

I did however do that very thing when I came out of Ray.

It covered the obvious stuff (Folsom, drugs, Dad drank, etc). I would've liked to have seen more of his childhood, just a little.

I don't know, maybe I just wanted the whole thing to be endless. I just thought that Ray covered a whole lotta bases that Walk The Line did not, that's all.
I did however do that very thing when I came out of Ray.
What about this comparison? While I thought "Walk the Line" was good, I thought it was strikingly similar to Ray (dirt poor Southern kid, childhood trauma, first "crush"/love, problems with drugs, problems managing home life and fame, redemption) and, by comparison, not as good (Phoenix is amazing, but Jaime Foxx was amazing+. Of course, just after that thought on the similarities, it occurred to me that that is probably the basic trend for most musicians of that time/place/genre. The Washington Post started its review out with this stuff - likening "Walk the Line" to not only "Ray" but also "Beyond the Sea" and even "Get Rich or Die Tryin" (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/co ... 02018.html)

So basically, other than each one being cool, is there anything here newer than the rich, or in these cases the musically famous, being different from us (but the same as each other)?

That wasn't Buddy Holly, that was Roy Orbison.

But yeah, they were all on Sun Records, along with Carl Perkins.

I thought the acting was superb, however I didn't really like how half the movie was just pills. They must have rehashed the same dialogue/scene 3 times just in different rooms. Overall it was good though. Highlights of the movie included making fun of Elvis, the rendition of "Cocaine Blues", and the audition scene.

I was hoping they'd bust out 'ol Carl at the Folsom concert scene (since he was there, or was that just at san quintin?), but I knew better, I guess. I wanted to see who they'd cast as him, even if it was a tiny cameo (like Roy).

<---- loves him some Carl Perkins.

Merle Haggard was in San Quentin when Johnny played there.

I saw this tonight too, after sneaking into Get Rich Or Die Tryin' for about a half hour. I liked it a lot but wished they spent more time on his childhood and less on his first marriage. I really liked the Folsom Prison scene though and it was pretty cool that Shooter Jennings played his dad. Anyone know what the song was that Johnny sang onstage with June that she said she recorded with her ex-husband?
