You know in that other thread where someone's acquaintance insisted that Panic! In The Disco were better and more important than the Replacements and the Pixies? Well, '93 was the era in which I first noticed that same kind of cosmic shift in majority perspective. Prepare thyselves, youngish Obnish, prepare thyselves.

Since it was my Listmania! #1, obviously I went with the Whigs. Pumpkins and Nirvana were great and musically formative for me, too. GREAT year.

I've posted about this before. My opinion is that Guyville was the beneficiary of timing. The music itself was flat and lifeless, but for some reason, in 1993 - over two decades after the first wave of radical feminism - a woman saying the words "fuck" and "blowjob" seemed shocking and courageous to a certain demographic. Guyville subsequently took its place as some kind of mythic artistic achievement, even though its creator had neither the talent nor the vision to ever reach those heights again. And, of course, she was publicly reviled when she inevitably failed to be the Liz Phair of that myth.

Yeah, that's my impression of Liz as well, but I didn't listen to Exile enough before selling it to say it myself.

Bottom line is that Exile IS a great record (IMO). And whether or not she ever matches that achievement (smart money on no), she would not be the first artist in history to release only one great record and a bunch of drek.

It may lessen the achievement in your eyes, but those are some seriously great songs... blue language or no.

Well put...I think I may just give you authorization to speak on my behalf on all musical topics concerning english language albums by white folks released 1990- present.

Naw, I don't hate 'em. And I find that I've come full circle in recent years to thinking Ok Computer and Kid A are better albums than Bends.
But that's as much a result of discovering that I really don't like Bends much as it is of really liking OK Computer and Kid A. Not a huge fan.

I gotta give it to Siamese Dream.

It isn't even debatable. In Utero kicks Nevermind in the balls.

I see some of this as being true, but I think the idea that the album was a success because of the instances of blue language is overstating the case. Guyville was hardly As Nasty as They Wanna Be. She said fuck repeatedly in one song, said she'd suck dick and be a blowjob queen. This isn't a big deal and it wasn't a top 10 album by any means (<500,000 sold since debut) and I really don't think the people who bought were so naive as to think it was revolutionary or anything. It was a bunch of pop songs. I enjoyed them a lot. That is all.

What we need is a Rush v. Stones debate... Whofa King Cares and Flowth'giner against LooGAR and Bloor.

Which "better than every other band, ever, on every album" band is better?
