I've been trying to think of a new podcast idea that would involve the Obner community, and thought I'd run it by everyone to see if there was any interest.

The new podcast would be bi-weekly, and would feature 4 rotating members of the Obner community reviewing 3 albums in detail. The show would be around 25-30 minutes in length, and would simply be a discussion on the albums and artists, and then a track from each album reviewed would be played. We could use GoogleTalk or Skype, and I can record the entire conversation, and then edit it and put in the music.

Anyone willing would need a decent microphone and GoogleTalk or Skype. That's it. I can supply the 3 albums a week ahead of each show, so each reviewer can have plenty of time to let the music soak in.

I think it'd be interesting to have different Obner personalities every other week spilling their love or hatred towards the music we listen to. If we're all drunk while doing it, it'd be even more entertaining.

If you're interested, let me know in this thread, and we'll go from there. If you have any other ideas, please relay them.

Dalen, This sounds like a great idea! Since I'm just a newb I don't know if I can contribute much to the discussion or reviews but I would love to help any way I can.

I think it would be cool if it were mixes rather than albums and folks on the board alternated making mixes. I don't think I'd be that interested in listening to 30 minutes of folks talking about one album though.

I've got sonar, a good tube mic, and a sennheiser 421 that's also good for vox. Anyone in chicago interested in doing this could record, and we can mail an mp3 of it to D.

30 minutes talking about 3 different releases.

I think it's a great idea, and would like to figure out how to get involved.

That helps some but not really that much.

I suppose having Loog and someone who likes Animal Collective debate t he relative merits of animal collective versus a weaker stones album could be enjoyable for a few moments...I think the novelty would wear out quickly and I'd just as soon listen to an album I enjoy.

I'd be more inclined to think a mix would be more interesting. I've always thought it would be cool if when people made mixes they sparked more of a discussion. Glad to see some of the reviews resurfacing.

Sounds like others are more interested though so don't let my naysaying stop you.

Only 3 releases?

I think you're gonna find talking about 1 record for 10 minutes ( on average ) is a really, really loooooooong 10 minutes.

Just sayin' . The concept of the podcast is solid enough.

Perhaps, but if you intersperced it with actual tracks or samples of tracks it would go by faster and be more entertaining.

I like billy g's idea about reviewing mixes though--that could be cool as well.

I tend to agree with Diggity. I also think mixes would encourage more music exchange which is something we ought to do more of. I'd be much more inclined to post a mix if it were to be discussed than I would when you get a few thanks posts but no real discussion.

There's no reason we couldn't try both though. I just don't think I'd personally be interested in the full album version.

well, if each track is say 5 minutes long or so, then we're left with 5 minutes chat on each track/album. ya think that's still a bit much?

we can rotate weeks, and do one week conversations about mixes, then the next week about releases.

i totally disagree. there's not much out there way of podcast in this format, and it IMO is an interesting, and honest concept that could be very popular amongst independent music fans. but, at the end of the day, even if it is just us listening, that's all gravy with me and i'm sure the other Obnerites.

most music podcasts are people playing the music they enjoy. this won't be like that, because we'll all have different opinions.

I don't disagree but is that even the point. I don't even think the majority of obners would listen most weeks but that isn't necessary for it to be worthwhile.

I'd like to participate, but I'd have to get a mic. Any suggestions for a good, cheap one?

I don't really care too much about what format this takes, but I think the 3 album idea is a good one.

Nice idea, Dalen. Thanks.
I'm interested, but would need some technical assistance to get going on it.
After you get the format a little ironed out and post it, I'll PM you for guidance.

Looking forward to it.

First of all, excellent idea.

I'd definitely be up for it, but am not currently set up to record voice. I'll get to it.
