I was in my crawl this weekend and found some old tapes.

One of them was never a favorite, per se, but it never failed to bring a smile to my face either...
Scruffy The Cat - Tiny Days

I listened to it today for the first time in probably 13 years or so.
It wasn't as good as I remembered.
Even the songs that I remembered the lyrics/melodies to weren't as much fun as I remember them being.

It's not that I think it's a bad album, by any means. It just didn't hold up for me. Bummer.

Y'all ever come across albums like that --- stuff you remember digging that you haven't heard in years, and they just ain't what you hoped for?

I had this experience when making post listmania mixes for people. I found I thought that Deacon Blue "Raintown" sounded pretty stuck in the 1980's. It sounds a little overly slick to my ears now. I still have a strong sentimental attachment to them but I imagine anyone hearing them for the first time today would wonder why I'd rated that album so high.

agree on bends - it's inconsistent, lacks the thematic continuity of okc, and the lyrics laughably sentimental in parts. i still like all the songs though, but as a whole it's far from their best.

I've never really been able to get into the Bends. Believe me, I've tried - I just can't quite get there. OKC and Kid A and HTTT I'm all over though.

As for the original question,

both Jane's Addiction albums wore out their welcome after high school
almost the entire Red Hot Chili Peppers catalog
Smashing Pumpkins
really, most stuff I listened to in high school with the exception of Sonic Youth and the Pixies (and Angel Dust)

Drivin'n'Cryin' - Fly Me Courageous

man I loved this disc. Now the lyrics kind of kill it for me since they are so lame. They don't even make sense.

the Twin Peaks soundtrack-- the same song recycled over and over.
David Bowie - ... Hours (as much as I love the guy, I need to unload this for some burrito cash or something)
Everything but the Girl - Temperamental -- sounded good in the late 90s, not so much now
Luscious Jackson - all of it

Weird. These two particular are still in rotation here. Never, ever get tired of Luscious Jackson, particularly Fever In, Fever Out and Tempermental.

Yeah, I feel that way, too. It's still one of my favorite albums, but not anywhere near as far removed from Simply Red/Paul Young type stuff as I thought back then.

There's a number of 80's bands like The Alarm that sound pretty cheesy now. I used to like them, now they sound like European Bryan Adamses with Bono fixations. Probably always did. Still like them, but mostly in a nostalgic way.

I just bought Poi Dog Pondering's s/t Columbia debut off Amazon for 3 bucks. Had it on a music director's advance cassette since 1989. That tape's been worn out for several years. Listened to it on CD today and realized it's as whimsical as frickin' Jack Johnson and pretty hippy-dippy silly. Still love their second album, but the first is fairly goofy and such easy going stoner folk I wonder why I ever thought it was any deeper.

C'mon guys, you aren't listening to the first couple of releases and saying that, are you (Suck On This and Frizzle Fry)?

I just thought of one that struck me recently: Sonic Youth's Dirty. This is definitely not as good as I remembered. In fact, I thought it was kind of shitty, tuneless nonsense. I realize some people might describe SY's entire career this way, but compared to their earlier work like Evol up to later releases like Sonic Nurse, this album is just terrible, save for one or two songs.

I hate this album, because I feel Sonic Youth tried to smooth the edges out for the teenyboppers. Hearing a song like "Wish Fulfillment"...you just have to laugh at how contrived it seems in retrospect
