He certainly has. I've always thought he was scumptious. Lucky you, Dana!

As a btw, I've a friend who's met DD a few times and said that all of 'em (except for Simon) were absolutely nice guys.

How long did you spend thanking them? Did you ramble? Were they surrounded by other people? Who had spoken to them prior to you approaching? How long after the show did you speak to them? Did the entire band act bored? Did you approach each member separately? What sort of setting was it?

Not to defend them, but your music heroes are people too. They might be tired, moody, etc. Of course, you're gonna find assholes in every music corner of the world. But, in my experience, waiting to talk to a band has mostly been good. Talking to them about something other than "oh my god, you're my favourite band in the whole wide world" is better received.

Just sayin'...

Those are all valid points. Some people aren't at all comfortable with receiving praise, for a variety of reasons. It's amazing how, for an artist, the nicest compliments can feel like the worst insults when, in your eyes, many of your personal goals haven't been met. I can imagine the Posies hearing your compliments and thinking to themselves shit like "christ, we've only sold X amount of records AND tonight we even flubbed the chords to our single." So maybe it wasn't boredom you encountered; they may have just felt uncomfortable and self-conscious.

i met bob nastanovich before a pavement show. well, we didn't speak. but he gave me a acknowledging nod and a 'come up to my room' smile. ( ok. maybe it didn't say all THAT much. but it was more than just a smile. )

i've met reid genauer ... who used to be with strangefolk, then solo and now with the assembly of dust. actually, i've met him several times. i know his manager pretty well. great guy. mighty humble. very personable.

i've also met xavier rudd. i heard him for the first time opening for ani difranco. he was awesome. during the break, my best friend and i went out to buy his disc. he was out there signing them. he was soooo nice. (and VERY cute.) he chatted with us for a bit. and....i got a hug! ooh la la!

and i guess i'll go ahead and admit to my others....that i've actually met and conversed with. (please do not judge me on these encounters.... the bottom line is... i'm a good friend and there was a time where i wouldn't turn down a concert outing. no matter what. )

hootie and the blowfish. (don't laugh! this was a LOOONG time ago. my college neighbor made me go. she also made me wait for them outside the venue by their bus.) darius and dean were very nice. this was before they were a hit. the other 2 guys....TOTAL jerks. so full of themselves.

kid rock. believe it or not.....he was the opening act for matthew sweet...which was weird. also a really long time ago. i was back at the merch table and he was there signing autographs for people who bought his cds. he had girls hanging all over him. i walked by. he said hi.

other acknowledging nods have come from:
michael franti, derek trucks and warren haynes.

I've had run-ins with Paul Weller (at the train station oddly enough) and Billy Connolly (college magazine interview).

The worst one of the lot though was an author, Armistead Maupin. What a complete cunt that guy is. I still imagine beating him to death with my tape recorder.

haha, I chatted with him at a book-signing once. His boyfriend was there with him, and the b-f just happened to be from Marietta, GA, so he was pretty nice. I can see how he might be jerk though.

not that he's anyone's musical hero, but andrew wk is one of the nicest guys ever. he will wait around for hours after shows to not just hello, but actually talk with everyone for a few minutes.

i interviewed john mayer once and he was very, very friendly and also pretty funny. self-deprecating, sardonic.

i also met boy george at a club in NYC through a friend of a friend. he seemed tired and annoyed when we met him, but he actually asked our friend the next day to apologize to us for his "rude" behavior.

Train played a show at the arena I worked for nearly three years ago around this time or early December. I believed the show was sponsored by the University. It was also around the same time their string of hit songs was getting unbelievably annoying.
When the band first came in the building I expected them to be douches, similar to how the Marroon 5 frontman acted in April, but they seemed genuinely impressed by our setup despite the age of the building. During their soundcheck, they started playing a Radiohead tune. They were also one of the few acts that had an open meet and greet rather than it being excluded to radio contest winners or sponsors.

I've found that there are major differences between musicians and "rock stars." When they become rock stars (or perceive themselves to be rock stars), that's when the 'tude kicks in. Most musicians/bands are just grateful to be playing in front of people, and if the crowd likes it and enjoys it, it's just icing on the cake. (btw, I am not a musician, so I'm purely speculating here)

I also agree with Aural's take on the existing environment before speaking to musicians. I've found that weird/undue adulation and name-dropping is a turn-off for most folks.

I met my childhood musical heroes once, The Forgotten Rebels. Fortunately they're basically unknown anywhere except Canada so they're not exactly 'rock stars'. I was 14 and showed up to the show early with a couple of friends. We caught the band setting up and getting ready, so we went over to say hi and offered to help move some gear. All super friendly (despite rumours that they were coked up idiots) and then told us to sit on the side stage to watch the show.

We all met 5 years later at another show in Sudbury ON. But that story falls under a new thread, "When Your Musical Heroes Meet You Again and You Behave Like A Drunken Asshole".

I actually kind of expect my idols to be assholes, and am more surprised when they're not.

I can deal with assholes, I'm kind of used to it.

john vanderslice - probably one of the nicest guys i've ever met.

travis from d-plan was pretty nice too though he had a bit of a rock star attitude. eric axelson was probably as nice as jv.

jamie lidell was a pretty nice guy and signed a poster for me. i really didn't talk to him too much though because some chicks were all over him. haha. i met beans from antipop at the same show and he was kind of a dick.

super furry animals - complete stoners

i don't think i've met anyone that's been an out and out asshole though.

they're not really big but I was obsessed with the Waxwings, especially their first album, for a long time. we had a show with them (w/ Brendan Benson in the mix), they came back to my apartment for an afterparty and we drank until 4am and they were awesome.

Yep - he chatted with my friends and I several years ago before a show at the House of Blues. I think one or more of us got bear hugs, too.

Jeff Tweedy gave my friend Chris a ride home from work a few years ago - said he seemed friendly.

One of my former roommates picked up Chumbawumba from O'Hare several years ago (doing a radio interview that day), and said that they couldn't have been more gracious.

seen colin meloy around town a couple of times and he seems pretty stand-offish but I am not the type to approach people.

spoke with Peter Buck once and he seemed pretty cool - we talked about the Go Betweens

I wish I never went to the show. Great show, but the other experience of meeting them ruined it for me.

I guess it's best that I try not to meet my musical heroes anymore.

It's weird you would mention this because the Posies are my musical heroes too. Last month was the first time I ever saw them live and on that nite i was in power pop geek heaven.

I usually never speak to my fav musicians just so that i won't end up being dissapointed if they end up being assholes but this time out, i just went for it. Jon and Ken were nothing but nice to me. Had a nice 10 min convo with Jon, even took one of my song requests ("World"), very pleasant experience. Sucks that it didn't go aswell for you. It really must have been a bad night for them. Those dudes have been non stop touring for the last 3 months. I'd be crabby too after that long a time on the road. :-)

You should try again next time out. I'm sure you'll get a diff result.

I met Vendetta Red.

they were nice enough...hardly rockstars. hardly good music.

One of them did say, referring to a mishap with the sound at their show, "man, that sound problem really harshed my mellow". my god. Harshed my mellow? It's probably one of the oddest things I have actually heard another human being say.

..jerks.

Well, perhaps "jerks" is too strong of a word for when I met the Posies recently, before and after their show. But when you you've been a fan for 15 years like I have, bought all their albums (and side projects, etc), and finally meet them in person to thank them for all the great music they've done and to congradulate them on the great show and in return they look bored...
...(long sentence, I know) it's disheartening.

my friend's ex-husband knows or has at least met a lot of bands and he apparently places ken stringfellow near the top of the list of absolute dicks.

I've talked with Dressy Bessy twice (basically my favorite extant band) and they are too nice for words--that may be expected to some degree, but they're just unbelievably wonderful.

Fred from Saturday Looks Good... is super nice as well.

I met Jeff Parker after a Tortoise show and he seemed really tired, but was really cool and friendly all the same.

I've never really come across any unpleasant experiences--which makes me even more upset for sensei :(

I've been pretty lucky - I've met most of my favorite bands, & they've all been pretty cool. I've met my share of douchebags, but they're usually in bands I couldn't care less about.

i've met lots of bands before, but never encountered an asshole moment... or at least i don't remember. it's la, so you encounter sightings everywhere so it doesn't really phase me if someone's an asshole.

i think my best experience was meeting death cab when they were on the late late craig kilborn (back when it was kilborn) and i brought a cmj magazine for them to sign. ben gibbard was completely stoked that i had that magazine with them on the cover and were totally awesome to me.

i'd be terrified to meet thom yorke, i probably wouldn't even know what to say if i ever did meet him. but if he ended up being an asshole, i'd cry.
