Now granted, I'm not a huge fan of his, but I can appreciate his work with the Small Faces. My mom has asked me for his latest "torch song" cd. Good God, what has happened to him when 66 year old grandmas want his cd's??? Is he just trying to keep food on the table? Is he a greedy bastard? Is he trying to maintain some sort of relevance with ANY audience? Please explain.

Eh...I was always under the assumption that was his audience. Nothing new to me. My mom, and my friend's mom have always been diggin' his shit.

I can handle some of his stuff. Maggie May and the like are decent enough. Does that mean I'm premenopausal (sp?)? And I'm a dude even.

I guess I should have prefaced all this with the fact that my mom is a complete idiot when it comes to music. She used to listen to the "elevator music" station when I was a kid... I believe it was called Peach FM, WPCH, in Atlanta. Usually instrumental crap. My mom has NEVER been a "rock n roll" fan by any means. She was one of those moms that at 30 didn't get "all that noise."

My mom was really hip to music when she was a kid. Her dad/my grandpa had a Navy buddy who was a show promoter and got them into shows in Jacksonville all the time. She saw the Beatles/Stones/Herman Hermits/etc all on some of their first US tours. She met them all too, cause the promoter would always send them to this out of the way pizza joint. My mom had scrapbooks filled with autographs, pics, etc. Alas, my grandma threw it all away. All that remains is a Beatles tourbook, and a lone photo she took of Jagger on stage.

I think he's got his sights on Vegas. Seriously. It's lucrative, and involves 0 creativity. Just stay consistant, and there's never any pressure to innovate, or to stay ahead of the curve... they Want you stuck in time.

**a note to BeeOk - I'm not knockin' it. It's a viable path for an entertainer to take, especially one with an eye towards sticking around for a long time. Beats releasing "original" albums that nobody buys.**

My dad was playing one of his newer cd's when I was over his house once. His voice is horrible for this music, not that the music is far behind.

but i'm just a prick like that.

Actually, the Faces album that is oftened erroneously referred to as First Step is credited to the Small Faces:

(and I prefer Never A Dull Moment to Every Picture, but both are perfect examples of exactly how much Stewart betrayed his own talent in later years)

When I worked at a Roller Rink in the early 90s and DJ'd, there was this old lady who used to ask me to play Rod Stewart and Billy Joel on a consistent basis. She was in damned good shape for her age though.

The Four Tops played my mom's junior prom, before they made it.

That's so cool.

This is totally lost on me.

As far as Rod Stewart goes his best years were before the Faces. It happened during the Mercury Record years released as a Box Set (which i have) called Reason To Believe where only the album Smiler isn’t classic. "Handbags & Gladrags" is also on the debut and no-one should of ever covered it past his astonishing version. Have never ventured into his later days but I’m sure some of it is pretty good.

edit: just looked it up and some Faces stuff was at the same time as some of his later mercury stuff.

Oh Scott Weiland, I get it now. My album 12 Bar Blues kicks some serious ass and well my newer project sold very well, thank you very much.

All of his Faces stuff occurred at the same time as his Mercury solo stuff. Stewart was in the odd position of having a solo contract at the same time as a separate Faces contract. The distinction between the two (for fans at the time) was academic, seeing as the Faces played on the Rod solo reckids - but the band felt Rod was hording his "best" songs for those solo albums.

I thought The Rod Stewart Album was around ’67 but was actually ’69. First Steps was ’70 but thought it was around ’72, looked at my CD but didn’t have a date so I hope AMG is right. I always liked Marriott fronting that band much more than Stewart no matter how good A nod is as good as a wink is. That Mod sound just seemed better fitted or was what I heard first and should be called the Faces because it was no longer the Small Faces ect…
