I have chronic asthma. A typical asthma attack for me is some wheezing and tightness of the chest, maybe some coughing, and of course, difficulty breathing. Also massive back pain usually accompanies an asthma attack.

Have you been diagnosed with asthma, Kerry?

i got my first asthma attack on a family vacation to disneyworld when i was 3. don't remember anything about it obviously. i have not had a major attack since then, but through elementary school, i had to use it whenever i played sports. i gradually got better and better as i grew older. then in college, i decided to start smoking (cigarettes along with other things). i suddenly needed my inhaler every morning. after college, moving from maryland to colorado made a huge change. the dry air out here is so great for my asthma and allergies. i think i am pretty much grown out of it now. every now and then on a really cold day skiing, i might need a puff or two.

edit: like opa, typically for me it involves tightness and difficulty breathing that goes away immediately after a puff.

yes and no. I have been given inhalers for "exercised induced asthma" before. I have had bad enough brochitus to be Nebulized several times...but I have never said to anyone "I have asthma." But it's been really bad lately- my sinuses too. I don't know what is going on but I had nothing less than a full on asthma attack at the gym last night, 10 min on the treadmill and it felt like someone was strangling me! The past few weeks I feel like it actually prevents me from exercising...

( I should add that My brother has terrible asthma and my dad has it too, so it makes sense that I would have problems)

I used to smoke, then I would be a "drinking smoker" but now two drags of a cig and I am hacking and wheezing (which in a way is good bc I haven't had a cig in months)

my bro moved to CA and has hardly any problems either.

My dad had asthma, and so did his dad. And recently, my sister has complained about breathing problems. I guess we have fucked up lungs.

By the way, my doctor, for years, has suggested I move out west. He's recommended California and Arizona in particular.

my lungs have been "itchy" since my little attack last night. I want to stick a pipe cleaner down there or something!

did either of you guys have problems with asthma when you were kids?
most everything i've heard/read shows that childhood asthma is usually outgrown, whereas adult onset asthma is more serious.

I've had asthma my whole life, actually. I've learned to live with it but it sucks having to carry an inhaler everywhere you go.

Kerry, if you're lungs feel sore or a bit tight, I suggest you ask your doctor about giving you some Prednisone. That'll make you feel much better. But only, if he feels it's right for you.

as far as you and mikey bith having asthma--the environment you grow up in has a lot to do with the development of asthma (everything from dust to organic solvents and gas ranges/space heaters).

True indeed. My family has always had a weakness for pets. I remember being a young child and finding myself waking up with a dog's tail in my face. Imagine the kind of shit I've inhaled in my lifetime.

I developed chronic asthma at the age of 20 after a severe respiratory infection---I'd never had a single symptom prior to that. I use an albuterol inhaler as needed, and have started on Advair preventatively.

If you use your albuterol inhaler more than a couple of times a week, you should ask your physician about starting on a preventative medication such as Advair, Singulair, Flovent, et al. I treat kids with asthma every day, and have found Advair to be the most effective of the preventative meds, but the others have their place as well.

Asthma sucks. (pun intended)

Prednizone, yikes.

I just had a three day adventure on it last week. Then again my dr's partner overdosed me with it, but hey! It's kind of a pain to be on and it will make you crazy, and hyper, but if it works it works.

My son had asthma problems as a youngster due to mold inhalation. He was on the nebulizer for a while. Had no probs until a couple months ago. Then he had a bad resp infection that lasted forever. He's now on Pulmicort and Albuterol.

He does ok but still coughs a lot.

I myself have problems here and there, mostly when I'm in really smoky environments. I'm a smoker that's weaning themselves off of it but when I'm not smoking for a couple days and I walk into smoke my chest feels nasty.

Good luck Kerry! I hope you feel better.

I had terrible childhood asthma. Had my first attack in 4 or 5th grade while ar a friend's house. Luckily, his brother had it, so their mom knew just what to do, and gave me a shot of an albuterol inhaler, and then told my mom about it. Unfortunately, Army doctors aren't too into preventative medicine, so I spent a lot of time in emergency rooms.

Was hospitalized for three or four days when I lived in Korea (air over there makes NYC seem like Glacier National Park) and again in 9th grade when I lived in KS.

Mine mainly comes from cold weather + exercise. Kills me. I don't carry an inhaler anymore, but up until like 4 years ago I kept one in my kit bag for emergencies.

Strangely, much of my asthma conditions were alleviated right around the time I became a chronic stoner.

I've always heard the weed is good for asthma...makes no sense, but I've heard that it's true.

I've got it, but thankfully I don't have attacks. It's just always THERE. I'm on the Advair, & I do Albuterol once a day. I can usually get thru the day that way.

That itchy chest feeling could be indicative of an infection.

most people on my mother's side of the family have asthma, including my sister...she smokes weed at least once or twice a day and a pack of cigarettes...

BRILLIANT!

she also goes to the hospital quite regularly on the hospital's dime.

BRILLIANT!
