It's Thanksgiving time, so I need some movies to rent. I want some quality stuff that I haven't already seen - kind of quirky or of beat or just under-the-radar stuff. Gimme some ideas.

Get Terry Gilliam's Brazil if you haven't seen it.

Beside War of the Worlds, the worst movie of the year.

My stepfather has said good things about this. Never seen it myself.

I recommend:

that CIA thriller with Pacino, Colin Farrell, and Bridget Moynihan.

Or, if you want Pacino, but not the rest:

just watch the Godfather marathon (all three films) that at least three different nets will be running on Thurs/Fri.

I meant to mention this in the sci-fi thread, but couldn't remember the title. I've looked it up since then: Code 46. Really good short-term-futuristic movie.

Nah, War of the Worlds was good.

The worst movie of the year was Be Cool.

Going to agree with Gar on War of the Worlds. By far the worst film of the year. Spielberg should be ashamed that he lined his pockets further with this drivel.

What made War of the Worlds so bad? I thought it was reasonably entertaining. It certainly wasn't the worst movie I've seen this year. That award goes to Madagascar. The 10 seconds I saw of Constantine come in at a close 2nd.

For me: plot holes, terrible acting or over-acting, not as impressive CGI as I was expecting, or have come to expect from Spielberg. Not enough valid "suspense" points, etc.

My opinion. Not going to bash anyone if they liked it, just felt it was a horrid film.

but i don't think that's necessarily quirky... it's just a damn good movie.

Havn't seen Be Cool. Nor Constantine. I suppose I lucked out.

But, I do have to add: Red Eye... The eye-candy is superb.

(Oh! Rachel McAdams!)

(Can't wait for The Family Stone (which, alack, doesn't hit MKE 'til Dec. 16 (even if the promos were purporting a Nov. opening).)

Everything else about RE sucked.

Funny Bones- Oliver Platt plays the son of a famous comedian (played by Jerry Lewis) who tries, but fails to follow in his dads footsteps in Vegas. So he returns to his place of birth Blackpool England, to find inspiration. There he meets a mad cast of characters including Lee Evans (Tucker from "There's Something About Mary") who's freakin brillant in this. It's an ode to vaudeville acts just like "The Imposters" (another film w/ Pratt I reccommend) was a tribute to Laurel & Hardy. There's a lot of direction changes & twists & I'm not even sure I understand everything that happened but I really liked it.

Avalon Perfect Thanksgiving weekend film. Barry Levinson's semi-autobiographical story about his Russian Jewish immigrant family's first 2 generations in America is tied together by 2 purely American holidays, 4th of July & Thanksgiving.
