I am intrigued by this, wouldn't mind your own personal perspective.

Not that it's unheard of, but more like unheard from: where is Hypermagic Mountain going to fit into some of these lists? Rarely have I heard a word mentioned of this latest Lightning Bolt piece, and I have my theory why: there has been a progression from Ride The Skies through Wonderful Rainbow to the current piece from 'spotty affair with equal parts transcendent and quirky moments' to 'solid flat affair with few standout moments'. Wonderful Rainbow was the happy medium.

You pretty much nailed it. I go back and forth between preferring Ride the Skies or Wonderful Rainbow, based on the highs of Ride the Skies and the consistent greatness of Wonderful Rainbow, but I never prefer Hypermagic Mountain. It's not going to make my list.

Anyway, am I the only one who likes Herman Düne - Not on Top? It's a surprisingly great album that I've probably listened to more than anything else this year. Not on Top, You Could be a Model Goodbye, Walk Don't Run, Little Wounds, Orange Hat, This Will Never Happen... all awesome songs. Top ten album for me.

I'll also agree with Colleen being really good, and I just got Micah P. Hinson based on this thread and am liking it a lot.

"At Last, Our Promises" fucks me up. It's very cathartic. I had memorable experiences listening to this album the night you introduced me to it, and in the airport anxiously awaiting my flight to Paris.

For the rap fans, check out DJ Quik's Trauma.

For some reason I missed it when making my Top-20.

My friend thinks the Gza/Muggs album is Gza's best since Liquid Swords, but I know other people who weren't that impressed. You should at least download a few songs to sample before you purchase it. If anything it's probably better than Legend of the Liquid Sword.

The Why? album sounded good based on the songs I heard off it. I didn't pick it up yet because it's not available at any of the stores in my area.

the Why? album sounds good the first 5 listens. Then that shit sounds tired.

my ongoing problem with Anticon releases.

that's usually how i feel about a majority of their releases, but elephant eyelash is just the best sing along record i've ever heard basically. nothing like blurting out absurd, nonsense lyrics at the top of your lungs.

As an irrepressible fan of Hymie's Basement and stuff, I must hear this Why record. Can someone please set me up?

anyone who likes tales of drifters, drinking, and desparation - apparently simple short stories laid over apparently simple music that with repeated listenings open up into much more - check out Richmond Fontaine - The Fitzgerald.

Fair enough. I've been withholding comment. Partly because I haven't given it a proper listen. Partly because it's not immediately appealing to me. I like the heavy but I'm not so big on metal. That said, this is more than pallatable metal. Some engaging instrumental sections, and definitely dynamic in composition, style, and recording. I like the cruder moments more than the richer polished moments. It's not the deadliest shit I've heard this year. (That distinction might go to Orthrelm.) It definitely warrants repeated soak-in listens.

I'm full. C'I be done yet? C'I have dessert?

i'm with you here. i like the painfully heavy sections that are very reminiscent of Iron Monkey and even early Fudge Tunnel. i had this album on all day working around the house. my neck hurts from headbanging.

i'll get you that other release. :D

Two others that will make my list, but I don't remember being mentioned here:

Lorna - Static Patterns and Souvenirs
Rosebuds - Birds Make Good Neighbors

Hold Hands and Fight off of BMGN is one of the best songs of the year.
