Uh, no. The dude is in the act of "smashing pumpkins" - it's got nothing to do with singular or plural (and if it did then the phrase would be smashed pumpkins).

that's my point about the lady asking me "weren't there four go-go's". Reading and comprehension are apparently two separate things around here.

and one could make the argument that one pumpkin is smashed...but the hammer is in the act of moving, so more appropriately, it should be called smashing a pumpkin. Good lord.
