This is about the 400th time you've criticized some kind of list/poll/etc. without offering up anything of your own. Now would be a good time to put up or shut up.
i think that i've made it abundantly clear that i think that most lists and list-making exercises are retarded.

Something about "Duke" bothers me even though it's a perfectly fantastic record. I think it has something to do with the albums that immediately followed it.

I usually open them to see what Dr. Winston offers. The scintilating debate over which british prog album from the 70s was the best album that year has been bubbling for quite a while and it doesn't appear that the students have got it sorted yet.

Good album, but IMO not nearly his best.

The first half is goddamn awesome, and I had it out on my desk to play later this afternoon.

Like yesterday's though, I'm not really a fan of anything else from this year.

The first disc is up there with anything he's ever done. And Sherry Darling is probably my fave Bruce song.

As it stands, my vote is for Emotional Rescue.

If I didn't vote other, it would be for AC/DC

You better not vote Black and Blue in 1976, that's all I gotta say :P

It's a great record... probably their best. If you like any hard rock at all, then you will like that Priest record.

It's definitely the right entry point for Judas Priest... but after they get to know the catalog better, a lot of people end up preferring either Stained Class or Screaming for Vengeance.

Depends on what else is out there. For this year, I can honestly say I don't really like or care about any of the records listed.

I do however, really like thsi series of polls, Spade. Good idea, and keep it up!

Thanks mang! It's funny that I spend my first 20 minutes doing this at work every day...I'm actually way more productive at doing this poll than I am at my job right now

Sad Wings made my Listmania.

well, duke & abacab rest between "and then there were three" which was an unfocused, post-prog-rock album, and "genesis", which was their full-swan-dive into pure pop. Abacab showed some strong pop leanings, but still remained nearly as strong as duke.

"scary monsters" just kicks my arse. in my top 3 of bowie albums, if not #1.

Here's some albums that I think were omitted from even the omissions list:

Jim Carroll Band - Catholic Boy
The Brains - s/t
Any Trouble - Where Are All The Nice Girls?
Artful Dodger - Rave On
Carlene Carter - Musical Shapes
Bruce Cockburn - Humans
John Cooper Clarke - Snap, Crackle, and Bop
Ian Dury - Laughter
Tav Falco's Panther Burns - Behind The Magnolia Curtain
The Heats - Have An Idea
John Hiatt - Two Bit Monsters
The Hollywood Brats - s/t
The Iron City Houserockers - Have A Good Time (But Get Out Alive)
The Jags - Evening Standards
Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons - Screaming Targets
Robin Lane and the Chartbusters - s/t
Graham Parker and the Rumour - The Up Escalator
Willie Nile - s/t
The Piranhas - s/t
The Saints - Monkey Puzzle
Split Enz - True Colours
The Teardrop Explodes - Kilimanjaro
Ronnie Spector - Siren
Teenage Head - Frantic City
Wreckless Eric - Big Smash

And my pick goes to Artful Dodger Rave On.

oh, this is 1980 too?! this'd be way up there on my '80 list, but not quite #1. it took me a few months to really dig into this, but i've grown to absolutely love it.

The winner of the Village Voice Pazz & Jop poll that year was London Calling. I guess we're considering the UK release date for that, Gang of Four "Entertainment" & the Specials S/T all which made the top 40 on their poll.

I'm afraid I'm gonna have to let Chase down as I don't have a lot of favorite non-white candidates for 1980. Stevie Wonder "Hotter than July" and Michael Jackson "Off the Wall" were two of the biggest soul albums that year. I don't like Michael Jackson and I still haven't gotten around to hearing Hotter than July although I've read it was his last strong album.

Other notable non-whiteys:

Clayton Downie -- Black Slavery Days
Fela & Roy Ayers -- Music Of Many Colors
Funkadelic -- Electric Spanking Of War Babies
Bob Marley & The Wailers -- Uprising
Orchestra Baobob -- Mouhamadou Bamba
Gil Scott Heron/Brian Jackson - 1980

and I think there was a Brides of Funkenstein release that year that I'd like to hear but haven't. The Clayton Downie album is strong enough that I'd consider it.

I can't really pick though because it comes down to:

Talking Heads "Remain In Light" - one of the most personally important albums to me in terms of influencing me, but one that I don't think has aged all that well.

English Beat "I Just Can't Stop It" - The album from that year that I've probably listened to more than any other from that year

Echo & The Bunnymen "Crocodiles", Bauhaus "In the Flat Field" or Clayton Downie -- the albums that I still like the most

If gang of four were considered 1980 though than it would be an easy choice. Great year in any case.

I went with "Remain In Light"; I'm a huge fan...I actually think a lot of it has aged quite well....some not so much.

And don't sleep on Emotional Rescue: very underrated Stones album.

Also a fan of "In The Flat Field" and of course the ACDC, Ozzy, and Judas Priest offerings.

Killer fucking year, man.

I agree. It may not have a "Miss You" but overall I think I like it more than "Some Girls" which I mean as the high praise it is. Although I may be waxing nostalgic because I haven't listened to it since I lost the 8 track. Which reminds me....paging the Senator.
