I Love this band and saw them around ten times in Los Angeles, then saw Mojave 3 around six times in San Francisco. I was head over heels in love with Rachel Goswell and one reason they were in the states so much was because after Rachel and Neil broke up they were seeing people in Los Angeles. Rachel told this to my girlfriend Amy at the time and believes this was true because they seem to live there.

Anyways the reason for this post is Pitchfork is saying that these are remastered reissues. If this is the case how do they sound? Anyone buy these yet? The ratings are:

Just for a Day 7.0
Souvlaki 9.3
Pygmalion 8.7

this was pretty wild because for some reason I was thinking of Slowdive in the hospital earlier today and I havent listened to them in a while. During some didactic session I just started daydreaming and thinking of Slowdive music, and I came home and saw that.

Need to get Pygmalion; as mentioned in the review, this is near impossible to find and if you do, it seems to go for about $445 retail.

I love Slowdive

Gonna pick up the JFAD and Pygmalion reissues, the best singles are on the JFAD bonus disc. I think ill just keep my old US bonus track version of Souvlaki though.

Yeah, Souvlaki is a classic. Never sounded like it needed a remaster to me. In fact, many of those Castle UK remasters don't really sound very good. I'd stick with the original on that one like splates. Looks like they are on the expensive side too since they are 2-disc sets.

But anyone that doesn't know Slowdive really should pick up Souvlaki, especially if you like some of that early Eno mix of ambience and vocals like on Another Green Day or the flip side of Before and After Science. Just too cool. Probably score the original for less than a 6-pack of Beck's.

 whoops, this skews the entire post holiday list. Played them on my radio show more times than I care count.

I'll be getting them. Just for a Day is one of my favourite albums of all time (you'all would say 'listmania').

Very true Davey (BTW, got your package in the mail today-thanks!) as Castle seems to be on the cheap side.

So being one of the biggest Boo Radleys fans in the world I wanted to get this information to Martin Carr and did via his message board to make sure that they didn’t cut the same corners that they did for Slowdive, Hurricane #1, and Swervedriver. I love Swervedriver but the reissue doesn’t even sound that good but I haven’t really played it much and regress. Martin informed the board that he is over seeing every aspect of the Boo Radleys Creation Records Anthology. Turned out that the Boo Radleys one on Castle UK are some of the best sounding remastered versions you can find by any band.

Martin is also happy that the Boo Radleys didn’t become a bigger band than they are. WTF is that? If you create some of the most experimental and challenging music of the 1990’s than you should be richly rewarded for you efforts. I guess they will just continue to be one of the biggest named checked bands in article after article but never really be heard.

How did this turn into a Boo Radleys rant, sorry Obner.

Own the Creation Records version of Souvlaki with the bouns Blue Day B-sides disc. Than about a year later SBK Recordings US put it out again and to make us Americans buy it they added four extra songs, never before released at that point. So I bought it again and won’t buy it a third time but have all the extra stuff anyways.

Another reason why I love Amoeba Records San Francisco. When Creation said they are done Amoeba went out and bought a bunch of stuff from them. So I was able to buy Pygmalion UK import for 9.95 brand new and they had like 75 copies of it. That is less than most new US discs were at the time. Almost sold my copy on E-Bay because it was going for around $100 and knew these were coming out via a message board inside information but never got around to it.

This is the version I have, but the one with the Blue Day disc is pretty sweet. And aren't the bonus tracks availiable on the '5' EP, with the exception of the Some Velvet Morning cover?

Glad to hear you got it OK. Let me know sometime what you think of that Shack Waterpistol CD. Seems like a forgotten classic to me. One of those albums that grows in stature with each listen. I only have one other album of theirs so need more. The comp has a melancholy core inspired by the Black Heart Procession song it takes its name from, and that also appears in the middle of the comp on the way down, A Light So Dim. The cover image is even borrowed from the liner notes of that album :)

Anyway, I thought you might enjoy it since it starts off with some Britpop type stuff including Animals That Swim and that same Shack and even a song from that Richard Davies album I just mentioned in splates' thread about unknown artists. All with hints of the melancholy to come as it moves into more sadcore territory with Califone, and the Tindersticks (doing a cover of Pavement's "Here"), and some others before heading down to the depths of despair with BHP, and then to the bottom with Joy Division, which doesn't quite fit with the surrounding production values but I shoehorned it in anyway. And then it begins the climb back up to a rousing finish with the Mekons and Andrew Bird. And some of the Steve Albini engineered Electrelane girls on the way, cleverly preceded by "Steve Albini's Blues" ;)

I love your passion Davey, will let you know what I think. That is why I wish you posted more… Also your package is almost done, you will be getting a few CDs. I bought a new HP computer and have this Light Scribe technology and you will be the first to have this laser burned artwork on the disc itself. I just haven’t played with this aspect of my computer yet. I have so many new toys with this thing it’s insane…

You are right, but the US one came out way before Creation put out the In Mind EPs. So "Some Velvet Morning" is only on the US CD and "In Mind" is only on the Creation EP. I have all of it but it is still record company bullshit...

Which Swervedriver reissue do you speak of?

I'm sure I'll buy these even though I have the originals. Any word on what the extra material is on Pygmalion?

Ditto - tracklistings on Amazon and other sites would suggest the same.
