This thread has implied that this box set is a great guide as an introduction to punk music on the whole.

Are there any other good box sets or compilations or lists out there that would serve a similar purpose for other genres?

A quick guide to new wave? A basic introduction to post-punk? A recommendation of the best chamber pop songs? for example. Any genre would do. I have a fear of not knowing some very important music.

You could just ask for mixes. People seem to like making mixes for people. A few mixes = your own custom box set, made with love.

This is a comprehensive intro to good music.

Hear hear. PM and tell me what pique's your interest.

And Loogar's right--that Stones box is worth every cent. Rhino's "Left of the Dial" is solid as well.

Not too high on box sets, but Rhino's "Just Can't Get Enough" and "DIY" series are tremendous, they dig pretty far for their stuff, so you end up with some delicious obscurities. The original "Burning Ambitions" comp is also a good place to start for classic punk, and "Urgh! A Music War" will do you justice as well.

There aren't too many post punk comps of which I'm aware, and the good ones are out of print and pricey--the PRE label put out a really good comp with The Scars, 2-3, Flowers, Gang of Four, and even some early Human League stuff. Rough Trade's "Wanna Buy A Bridge" is a classic, but hard to come by nowadays--features TV Personalities, Spizz Energi, Swell Maps, Delta 5, Stiff Little Fingers, Cab Voltaire, etc.

Let's pretend I'm an idiot. (Hold your jokes, thank you.) I want to listen to good music but I don't know where to start.

Name some genres I should definitely have at least a minor knowledge of and I'll let you know if I'm acquainted and/or interested in it.

For example:

electropop, interested, don't believe I know anything.

ska, not interested at all, know a bit of contemporary stuff.

If you're interested in 80's synth pop I have several folders worth of the best of that genre that I'm making available on CC.

Name dropping:

New Order
Pet Shop Boys
Erasure
New Order
Depeche Mode
Human League
Information Society
Soft Cell
Yaz
When In Rome

to name just a few...

I would also suggest a trip to allmusic.com and take a look at thier genre lists, and see what interests you. Start with what you know, and branch out from there.
