Bump just because this should be on page 1 all day long.

Wonder why this isn't getting more attention/discussion today. Its a very deep year without really an obvious winner. I think this may be the first day that every 1 of the 10 SK picked got a vote, or at least got a vote quickly.

np: John Cale/Terry Riley "Church of Anthrax" - another 1971 release

1991 had a similar result...even though I plum forgot Achtung Baby, but you're absolutely right....it wasn't this even this quickly.

When I first started doing this poll, this was definitely one of my top 5 years I was looking forward to doing. My top two are gonna be the last two :)

I can't believe how much amazing stuff was released this year. Holy Christ.

Sticky Fingers gets it but there are at least a dozen certified classics on these lists.

Looks like my vote tied The Stones with Bowie. Cool! (Love Hunky Dory btw)

I voted other but Hunky Dory is my 2nd favorite Bowie album and Sticky Fingers is probably my 2nd favorite Stones album. I wish I'd thought to bring in only 1971 releases to listen to today that would have been pretty cool. Maybe I'll do that with tomorrow's year if SK picks a good one and posts it early enough.

np: Billie Holliday "Lady in Satin"

I'm bored so:

1. T. Rex - Electric Warrior
2. The Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers
3. David Bowie - Hunky Dory
4. Joni Mitchell - Blue
5. Kraftwerk - 1
6. Can - Tago Mago
7. Al Green - Let's Stay Together
8. Pink Floyd - Meddle
9. Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin IV
10. Leonard Cohen - Songs Of Love And Hate
11. The Kinks - Muswell Hillbillies
12. Black Sabbath - Paranoid
13. Marvin Gaye - What's Going On
14. Faust - s/t
15. The Who - Who's Next

I haven't really listened to Maggot Brain enough yet, but I love the two Funkadelic albums that precede it.

Following Drinky's lead, this is probably my top 15:

1. Marcos Valle "Garra"
2. Joni Mitchell "Blue"
3. Eugene McDaniels "Headless Heroes of the Apocalypse"
4. Serge Gainsbourg "Histoire de Melody Nelson"
5. Gil Scott-Heron "Pieces of a Man"
6. Rolling STones "Sticky Fingers"
7. David Bowie "Hunky Dory"
8. T. Rex "Electric Warrior"
9. Doris Monteiro "Doris"
10. Leonard Cohen "Songs of Love & Hate"
11. Jorge Ben "Negro e Lindo"
12. Bill Fay "Time of the Last Persecution"
13. The Who "Who's Next"
14. Aretha Franklin "Young, Gifted & Black"
15. Caetano Veloso "Caetano Veloso"

That Fela Kuti is my favorite Fela and I'm not sure if Marvin Gaye would even make the top 20 for me...so yeah, really strong year.

I'm surprised there isn't more retro-love for Carole King's Tapestry - but then again, I'm not sending any to her either. My '71 top 20 would look something like this:

1. The Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers
2. Mott The Hoople - Brain Capers
3. Alice Cooper - Love It To Death
4. John Lennon - Imagine
5. The Flamin' Groovies - Teenage Head
6. T. Rex - Electric Warrior
7. Rod Stewart - Every Picture Tells A Story
8. Alice Cooper - Killer
9. The Faces - A Nod Is A Wink . . . To A Blind Horse
10. Brinsley Schwartz - Despite It All
11. Gil Scott-Heron - Pieces Of A Man
12. David Bowie - Hunky Dory
13. MC5 - High Time
14. Harry Nilsson - Nilsson Schmilsson
15. Van Morrison - Tupelo Honey
16. Funkadelic - Maggot Brain
17. Janis Joplin - Pearl
18. Cat Stevens - Teaser And The Firecat
19. Sly & the Family Stone - There's A Riot Going On
20. REO Speedwagon - s/t

I've still gotta hear that Alice Coltrane (and a bunch of other stuff).

Nice to see this so high. I forgot about Tapestry which I like although it wouldn't have made a difference to my ranking. Don't care much for Alice Coltrane personally.

Nice to see this so high.

Thanks for introducing it to me. It always amazes me what great stuff gets lost as the years go by. If it took me 25 years to hear something as cool as Pieces Of A Man, then what else is out there that I'm missing?

Answer: shitloads (conservative estimate)

Edit: oh what the hell - let's make it 35 years for me to hear Pieces Of A Man.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who is like this. Like I mentioned earlier, I just heard Sticky Fingers for the first time in the last month or so. One of the Stones' more celebrated albums. Not even slightly obscure and I'm a fan to boot.

I guess the question could then be posed: How and why did it take so long to hear some of this music.

Answer: I have no idea.

Actually, I discovered them earlier this year and I love it. I only need "Three Of A Perfect Pair" to complete my collection.
