Has anyone else seen Michael Winterbottom's film 9 Songs? As much as I love him as a director I think he may have actually went a bit looney on the premise of this one. Let it be known that this is essentually a softcore porn, with more nibbles and bits shown. Concert film was shot of Primal Scream, BRMC, Franz, Von Bondies, Dandys, Elbow, and SFA. Basically there was no script and these two people had 3 days to get to know each other and then Winterbottom had them have sex and all that fun stuff. Tells the story of a glaciacologist from UK who falls for a US girl. She's all kinky like and their relationship seems to be very much in the parallel form of a glacier...imagine that.
It was shot on DV, as per Winterbottom's films generally are, and as a videographer/filmmaker, I have to bitch and complain about how crappy the picture looked. Blacks weren't saturated, colors looked flat, and the DVD transfer was just horrid. Erg. Storywise, it was just lacking all types of generally good things, such as a plot. Obviously the problem was a lack of a script. The loose story was enough to get you through it, which for the most part consisted of sex, music, sex, sitting around, music, sex, more sitting around, Antarctica footage, sex, music...etc etc.
If you are only interested in the performances, don't bother. Shaky as hell handheld shots that were shot from waaay back. None of the bands performed especially fantastic. Hit songs from the bands were chosen, and it seemed like they were just tired of them...especially Franz and Dandys. Courtney Taylor-Taylor just was lethargic...high perhaps?
Wouldn't recommend it. The magic of 24 Hour Party People just isn't there. Bleh.
