I'm just wondering what you think of the city you live in as far as attracting good bands, having a good local music scene, good indie venues, etc.

For example, I live in Indianapolis which has terrible local bands and rarely attracts good national acts but has a couple of good venues and some cool record stores so I'll give it a "4".

I'm not sure how well this will work, but it can't hurt to try.

Crap, don't have enough for a "1". Think of "2" as "as bad as it gets".

I voted 8.

Mainly because I think the venues are known to fuck with bands way too often, i.e.: Change of set times, change of order, canceling shows last minute, overbooking bands, screwing the bands of money.

I've heard of this happening way too often to vote higher.

But the bands themselves are pretty damn incredible. There's a lot to offer here and we get absolutely everybody through here.

That's weird, I had a "1" but when I submitted the poll it was gone. I'll know better next time.

Well yes, this is true. But I'm speaking as a concertgoer, as opposed to a musician/person that's "involved" with the scene.

The one MAJOR qualm I do have with Chicago is the lack of radio support that local bands get. There are a couple of 1/2-hour shows dedicated to local music every week, but other than that, you can't hear anything from local indies on any station with a range of more than 5 miles.

WLUW is my mama.

That's because you submitted the poll before you added the "1" to the poll. I think you can edit it.

Metallica at one end of the spectrum, or Smothers Brothers on the other end. Las Vegas doesn't hold much attraction for the kind of music I want to hear perfomed live. I will, however, shill a little for my favorite music store anywhere, ever- anybody into music that comes to LV and doesn't stop in Big B's is missing a large treat in a small package.

I tried but it will only allow me to edit my message, not the actual poll. You're right, I forgot to click "add" after adding the last option. Oh well.

I've given Montreal a "7". We do get a very respectable amount of good shows, and, in particular, there is one promoter that consistently brings excellent bands and perpetuates a pretty good vibe about their events. We're a little short on venues, and months of passable weather, but we do fine. I know there are a ton of talented people who live and make art here, but I haven't been especially inspired by many of them - that could be due to my possible lack of effort to involve myself with anything local. And, while I have always really like The Arcade Fire, please don't suggest to me that they're inspiring. The scene here kind of brings me down a bit, but I'm sure if I had the luxury of a close circle of people with whom to make music, my outlook would change. I think Montreal has potential to do much more than it does, even though it is already great.

I gave Philly a 6. Most bands swing by during their tours, but we do get skipped from time to time. As far as I know, though, the local scene is not very good. we just don't have that many venues. plus I think most local bands just move to NY. can't say I blame them.

also, radio here is pretty much all corporate, with the exception of the usually folksy XPN (UPenn), so not very good imo.

I like at least 3 Philly bands. Need New Body and Bardo Pond are both pretty good, and this Man Man Cd is kinda cool.

I gave Atlanta a 4, but I'm probably being generous.

Ahhh yes. See I took it from a different standpoint, but yours is good too.

And I agree 100% regarding the radio support. It's awful here. And I really don't think that Local Anasthetic has ever been a good medium for the bands here. I think they could do better.

I gave Vancouver a 6, mostly because there's so many awesome local bands. But that Canuck/Yankee border really cuts down the amount of touring bands that bother to play here, plus there's a dearth of decent venues in this city.

Let me just state, for the record, that, while WXRT's support of local bands is anemic, at best... I truly do apprecite Richard Milne's efforts to do what he can to support the scene within the limitations imposed upon him by XRT brass.

He's a good man, with pretty good taste in music. And I wish he was given more input into the station's programming.

I gave Boston a 9. There's some pretty good stuff out there now with the Beatings, Autumn Rhythm, Night Rally, Bon Savants, etc.

LA- do I need to really say how spoiled we are?

Given any day of the week, you're guaranteed to find a good show somewhere.

Awesome venues for small shows- Spaceland & Troubadour, which bring in all the great local talent.

Other venues: El Rey, Henry Fonda, The Wiltern, The Palladium, The Greek Theatre.... damn there's so many more.

Awesome venue for HUGE shows- Hollywood Bowl.

Not to mention, we have Amoeba. You don't (except for SF). *neener neener neener* On top of 7238493748239 other record stores to choose from.

Although, one thing I really dislike are the ticket prices. I mean, $33 for Muse @ the Wiltern last night. Um yeaaaaah. That's because Clear Channel owns over all here. And shows sell out all the time, so it's sometimes hard to see who you want to see.

So I give it a 9.

we hae ever act tour through here, and some good local bands, but there is a total lack of variety in the local scene. lots of the same thing and not much variety in terms of venue.

then again, I am comparing it to london or ny or berlin or something.

I voted 9 because I voted based on the bands. Combined with the venues I'd give it probably a 6 or 7.

DC - 9 -- there's always room for improvement, but yeah, I have access to pretty much anything my heart and ears desire.

Raleigh/Chapel Hill gets most acts that are in the southeast on tour. Sometimes they skip over us going from DC to Atlanta, but usually, they stop through at the 5 or 6 different venus we have.

Also, there are a ton of local bands that are doing interesting things. There are a few great CD stores. So I gave my area an 8.
