I'm going with the Mats, though it's not my favorite from them. I'm just not real big on this year either.

I voted for "Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me" by The Cure.

Also released in 1987:
Fleetwood Mac - Tango In The Night
Michael Jackson - Bad
Jethro Tull - Crest Of A Knave
Rush - Hold Your Fire
Frank Zappa - London Symphony Orchestra Vol. 2

Haq - if you can replace Spacemen 3 with Joshua Tree and add two votes (and subtract a vote from Appetite and a vote from other) then we could rewrite history...

Weak year? Guns'n'Roses? You chillen obviously lacked proper schooling.

Omissions:

Blue Movie - Milking The Masters Vol. I
The Broadcasters - 13 Ghosts
Bongos, Bass, & Bob - Never Mind The Sex Pistols, Here's Bongos, Bass, & Bob
The Cult - Electric
The Del Fuegos - Stand Up
The Fleshtones - The Fleshtones vs. Reality
Green On Red - The Killer Inside Me
Paul Kelly & The Messengers - Gossip
Los Lobos - By The Light Of The Moon
Naked Prey - 40 Miles From Nowhere
Opal - Happy Nightmare, Baby
Redd Kross - Neurotica
The Saints - All Fools Day
The Screaming Tribesmen - Bones + Flowers
Thelonious Monster - Next Saturday Afternoon
Scruffy The Cat - Tiny Days
10,000 Maniacs - In My Tribe
The Wild Flowers - Dust
Ben Vaughn - Beautiful Thing
Young Fresh Fellows - The Men Who Loved Music

That self-titled Lucinda Williams album is her best, which makes it a good bet for top of any year. But there were a lot of great albums - it was a good time for music. Punk and metal and alt.country hadn't yet been codified, so bands were unafraid to forge directions for themselves - and the "alternative" scene was still an alternative to the genre-based top 40 charts.

I'm going with the Jesus and Mary Chain Darklands.

strong album that i wasn't really into at the time it was big. best metal album of the 80s? probably. But with those last 3 tracks that seem to fizzle Appetite out, i can't give 'em best-of-87

I played the shit out of that Sinead O'Connor album. It's between that and Pet Shop Boys' Actually.

Actually, it's probably Tear Garden's Tired Eyes Slowly Burning.

Yeah, I think this is an incredibly strong year; probably has a lot to do with context: I was 12 and spent most of that summer working my ass off doing landscaping for my dad's business so I could buy a CD Boom Box (I seriously think it cost like 250 dollars or maybe more  )

Very much the year I made a HUGE transition musically. I went to a summer camp where I was introduced to U2 and REM (the first CD I ever bought was Document, the second was Appetite); I switched schools and started hanging out with metalheads and I rode to school evryday with my brother, who was one of the first white dudes in our area who was seriously into hiphop (yes, I was told that we were nigger lovers as I rocked my shell toed Adidas and Metallica t-shirt).

So this, to me, seems like the pivotal year of hip-hop, metal, and my future love of more "college rock" and also saw the release of at least two records, Earth*Sun*Moon and Locust Abortion Technician that would be huge for me a few years later.

All that being said, I'm going with Joshua Tree by a nose over Appetite.

I might have to do a Top 10 on this year.

Also, Girls, Girls, Girls came out in '87---not a great album but "Wild Side" and the title cut are fucking INCREDIBLE singles.

Hands down, Appetite. Not even a second glance at anything else. One of the best debuts ever. This has never left constant rotation in nearly 20 years. I think I went through 3 cassettes of this album before finally getting the cd.

Also, for the benefit of Elvis Fu: The 12 year old Yail Bloor would probably pick The Joshua Tree as well but that's only because he didnt discover Anthrax's - Among The Livng until the next year.

Really?! While 'You're Crazy' is probably my least favourite song on the album (I like the Lies version better) 'Anything Goes' and 'Rocket Queen' are probably two of my favourite GnR tunes. Especially Rocket Queen, that just slays and brings the album to a badass coda.

<--Rockin' to GnR all day long tomorrow.

Put that pipe away, man. Five of my all-time favorites are on that list. I went with Appetite, but could have just as easily went with any of the other four. There are some great ones in that list that didn't even make the cut.
