DUDES!!!!

My year may have just been made. The company I work for has entered into a co-sponsorship deal with Fender guitars. We will be promoting each others products at various events, etc.

The thing is we will be providing each other with our respective products.

So this means a free guitar for Derris!!!

I am not familiar with Fender acoustic guitars. I already have a Strat for electric and I don't play electric often, which means I don't play out. If I did I'd get a Tele. (still might)

What can you tell me about their acoustics? Which ones are good?

I'm sure I won't be able to ask for a top o the line one but I should be able to get a very good one. I don't know price range but I would think $800 or under.

HELP! Recommend me some.

I know you can. Phil, Todd, Spade, Busty, robotboy, KPH, Capn, ChuckD??????? Any other guitarists I'm forgetting.......

Not familiar with Fender acoustics.
But let me live vicariously through you...

GET A THINLINE TELE!!!
(the one with the single-coil pickups and the f-hole)
Then... let me pretend to be you for a while.

That is totally cool news.

Wish I could help you with the acoustics, though. Sorry.

All I know about em is that Carson has one that he bought for like $150 and thing is GREAT for the money. It's sooo easy to play.

That's about it.

Cap'N and the wife spent the night at my house and hopefully he'll hop on my computer and see this. He'll probably know WAY too much about Fender acoustics.

Count on it.

I have played a few Fender acoustics, and two friends of mine have owned two different kinds, and I have yet to have anything positive to say about them. Bleck. If I were you, I would definitely grab a Tele of some sort. Sidenote: when the fuck are they going to reissue the Starcaster? That's a sweet guitfiddle.

wait, CAN you get an electric? If so, get a fucking telecaster! Their acoustics aren't very good IMO.

Dude, get the most expensive electric you can, sell it, and buy a Martin. I don't think Fender even makes medium- or high-end acoustics (I take that back - they're called "Guilds").

Your answer:

Fender makes higher end acoustics, sorta. Nobody buys them. They also own Guild, yes, but none of their acoustics have ever gotten my nipples hard, neither. Fender's bag isn't acoustics, except for the $150 ones, which they do very very well.

Look at this like an investment project. Get the best thing they make (within whatever sorta budget you get.) Speaking of, what's the budget? Either way, get an electric and then do with it what you will (christmas is coming up, and I'm always glad to get another guitar. This would make an even 15 for me, I think, so that's pretty cool...) Do NOT consider getting one of their acoustics. Use them for what they're good for, which is telecasters (since you already have a strat.)

Gimme a budget figure, and I'll show you the best thing they make in that range, factoring in the "cool/nobody else really has this very often" aspect.

Wait, so they get what, free bike tires? What a ripoff!!

Well, they're getting a bit more than that but I don't want to go into it here.

I don't know exactly how high we can go as far as price. I'm not going to ask them for the $3,000 Eric Clapton Strat or anything. I'm asking for something under $1000. I love the Sunburst look on a Tele. What is the difference in the sound of a Tele and say a Jaguar or a Jazzmaster. I like the looks of those also.

I was checking the Fender site and there are so damn many.

Oh and thanks to everyone who responded. I appresh.

Jags / Jazzmasters are a little darker, more Wilco than Sunvolt. They were NOT top-o-the-line when they were introduced, but have become more highly valued with time. They're good, and they're rarer, but the uses for them and the market for them is smaller. There'll be fewer versions of them (stuck with the color / options they offer), but if you like it, go for it.

$1000 could buy you a very nice guitar. Fender is still a deal in some respects. I think the cheapest Tele Deluxe falls at about that line, with the noiseless pickups and the ivoroid binding... mmm.... tele deluxe... great, now I gotta untuck my shirt.

Thanks Cap.

I guess I'll go with a Tele Deluxe then. Is there a different sound produced with a maplewood fretboard vs rosewood?

Also, is there something slightly more pricey than the Deluxe that I possibly could shoot for?

In looking at their site they show all of these vintage guitars like a 72' Tele or a 62 Strat or something like that.

Are they just replicas attempting to recreate the sound of these or what? A 50's Telecaster sounds pretty cool.

Also, what is ivoroid binding?

I'm guessing that is a shiny line where the top meets the body. I wouldn't stake your purchase on it.

i like the maple fretboard better--it's a bit harder. the 50's replica with the "butterscotch" color is wicked cool. and i'd suspect "ivoroid" is ivory-like binding around the body of the guitar. if you want something different, though, don't rule out the baritone guitar. it's something i've always wanted but never wanted to shell out the $$ for.

as far as the questions you asked perviously:

the jags have a gibson-size scale (meaning shorter--24" and change) that makes the strings a little less taut hense the "darker sound". cobain used the jag and put really heavy strings on it.

the jazzmaster can be a little squeal-y for some tastes. it's what's used on the afghan whigs "gentlemen" and alot of surf bands, too.

the tele is really bite-y. . .for lack of a better word. the scale is the same as a strat (25.5"). i have a tele that has a humbucker at the neck position and i really like having that option. i like teles more than strats personally and had a jazzmaster at one point, too.

Get a guitar you can sell, bari's are hard to unload. Jazzmaster is Elvis Costello's axe of choice, and I like them tonally better than the jaguars. You really can't go wrong with a tele, yeah they can be twangy, but they also have a rich buttery jazz tone that alot of jazzers dig on. The 52 Reissue tele is awesome. Ivoroid is off white plastic that they bind the guitar edge with. It lasts longer than actual ivory and is legal. It's basically decorative edging. The tele's and strats will get you the best resale value as they are more in demand.

Thanks for all the help everyone.

I've narrowed it down to these two:

Image

American Telecaster Deluxe, Aged Cherry Burst Maplewood, Abalone inlays

or

American Vintage '52 Telecaster Reissue, Butterscotch Blonde Maplewood

Whaddya think?

I'd go with the Deluxe. They're both pretty good guitars, but the bridge on the '52 can be a little annoying. It's a little easier to make adjustments when each individual string has its own saddle, as opposed to the two-per-saddle setup on the '52. Either way, I'm jealous.
