That's a quality album as well. I need to hear it again too. Lots of good stuff on that opus.

GnR with a commanding lead. I would have never have guessed that there were so many fans here.

edit: and I just noticed that no one's voted for D Jr. yet. That's pretty surprising.

Easiest vote yet, Dinosaur Jr in a landslide.

Revisionist historians. I actually had the mullet and the G'N'R t-shirts; Rural Georgia in the mid 80's was such a hip place.

'Schizophrenia' is one of my all time favourite songs so I have to go for 'Sister'.

I'll effort that the next time at my mom's house. I'm always up for a good laugh myself.

Sonic Youth - Sister.

Darklands is the worst JAMC I own. Overall, a weak year in comparison to most others.

You can't go wrong with the Prince or Sonic Youth. 'Actually' is a great one--right on, Dusty. I also like Ornette Coleman 'In All Languages' (especially the old group's part).

Not mentioned ( I think):
Dramarama Box Office Bomb
Redd Kross Neurotica

That was a pretty good review of 'Pleased To Meet Me'. It's not terrible or anything but the thing just never takes off. The sad part is it was probably meant to sound that way!

I voted for Joshua Tree, but I recognize that Appetite for Destruction probably deserves it, I just wasn't a big G&R fan back then and never bought the album.

I really liked the Echo & the Bunnymen s/t release that came out that year, one of their best and under appreciated.

I'd venture a guess that anyone within 2 years +/- our age NOT voting for U2 or GnR are the revisionists. I was in 4th grade when this came out. I remember my brother bringing it home, and he and his friends rocking the fuck to out.

Truth be told, I was never a huge GnR fan, and although I recognize it as a classic, I'm a much bigger Sonic Youth fan. My favorite album I heard in 1987 was probably a Beatles album. I was very out of touch with contemporary music in the 7th grade.

I'm not within 2 years of your age so I guess it doesn't necessarily apply to me but I never liked G'n'r and I was surpised that so many people here were fans. I can't tell for sure whether being a revisionist is supposed to be a knock or not. Salif Keita is my favorite from 1987 now, but I didn't hear it until 5 years ago. If I were forced to vote based on what I actually did listen to and love in 1987 it would be either U2, Smiths, Replacements or D Jr. I didn't think that was really the point though as if it was I'd be forced to vote for a whole lot of crap for the mid 70's and most people here would be disqualified from voting in the 60's and early 70's.

np: The Who "Who's Next" - I still stuck in 1971 from the poll the other day

Yeah, I don't particularly get why so many people feel compelled to vote for what they were into at the time. If that's what makes this poll fun for you then that's cool, but my favorite-at-the-time is more often than not eclipsed by something I discovered later on.

I think its at least partially a function of alot of people focusing most of their purchases and listening to current year releases. So favorites from a particular year stay more static than they would if people focused less on current releases and bought more catalog stuff.

np: Caetano Veloso S/T (1971) - continuing 1971 listening

I get this, but Appetite has been a staple of listening/mongering since I really knew what music was, and most of us who are the same age range probably had some good times with that album.

I'm not saying you have to vote your fave album at the time, but I guess I did kinda imply that. Whatever, I'm kinda hungover for the first time in a while mid-week.[/i]

Come on guys. It's a you say toMAYto, I say toMAHto. One could make a case for any of these releases. They are all fantastic releases IMO.

I know I'm not consisitent with my voting. I'm not approaching it from a rock journalist point of view meaning historic relevance, impact, critical acclaim, etc.

I can only vote for albums that I have heard and the years where I wasn't even born I obviously don't have any context other than I discovered it years later.

As for this particular year I was an impressionable youth and when I heard all these albums I still thought rock n roll was bigger than life and could change the world, etc.

When this is the case I vote for the albums that I have enjoyed the most over the years and to hell with critical acclaim.

I for one have listened to Appetite more than anything else on that list and I still listen to occasionally especially in times of revelry. I simply dig it the most and I can't vote for something just because it may have more historical relevance and may have influenced more bands, etc.

I'm not sure that makes sense.

Oh, dam! Nailed.

OTOH, maybe those were our favourite albums at the time (in my case, U2 was riding pretty high), but perhaps our minds have changed. In my case, I am not so fond of U2 as I once was, and hardly ever listen to their music, so they would in no way be considered a favourite of mine.
